Hey kids! If you think reading's boring, just remember... movies can be boring, too!

Looked at with fresh eyes, this movie isn't that good, especially if you aren't a kid anymore. But this film was the one that really defined my childhood and my love for stories so I can't be as hard as maybe I should be. It's a fun little story with a good voice cast, even if its very dated and library propaganda.

Like everyone else is saying; fun when you're a kid, not so much afterwards. Cast is good though

An uninteresting film that doesn't even remotely do justice to the literary characters it tries to bring children's attention to.

Yes, it's quite bad. But for kids, this is a truly epic fantasy adventure. One of my favorite things as a kid. Also, Christopher Lloyd is great. The one scene with the musical score about halfway in is magical.

A tiresome cartoon filled with stupid unsatisfying animations, ridiculous use of color and tedious sound. The story, plot and script were entirely unsatisfying. Shockingly bad use of familiar celebrity voices, and horrible art direction.

I watched this over and over as a kid, mostly because of the sneak preview of the Power Rangers movie that came on the VHS. It's a fun, offbeat little film.

Easygoing fantasy relic from the downward slide from Culkin-mania is clearly a rushed (comparative) cheapie, but as always Culkin himself is a reliable trooper, and the vocal efforts of Goldberg, Stewart and Welker make for an enjoyable support cast. There’s not a great deal to distinguish this (and the paraphrasing of THE NEVERENDING STORY is a little too blatant, though I was waiting for the bullies to get their comeuppance!) but there’s nothing terribly offensive either.

Despite repeated viewings of it as a kid I have absolutely no nostalgia for it. Even for children's movies you can do so much better.

A very basic early-90s kids' movie narrative; not especially bothersome, but also not much to recommend or remember. A lot of the voice actors are fun and strong, there's some good animation, weird suburban anxiety... I gotta say that, if you're encouraging young children to read, telling them to pick up Moby Dick or The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or some other thick Victorian tome is probably not a great idea. But hey, they're Classics(tm) in the public domain, so whatever I guess.

A nice 80 minute adventure with a sufficient amount of heart and not too much silliness. For those unsatisfied with the amount of literary jokes, how about when he lifts Atlas Shrugged over his head?

A unique film for its time with the mixture of live-action and animation. However other than that, the rest is pretty forgettable

You know, I find it pretty hilarious how a movie tries to tell kids to be bookworms... when the protag himself is a bookworm whom the message should be not relevant to anyway. Not only is the message cheesy, but it's done in such a lazy way. We see Moby Dick and Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde but what about them that would entice me to read about them based on what I've seen in this movie? They don't explain who or what they are, so why should I care? Also lol at those stupid talking books.

Absolutely love this movie. Watched many times with the kids. Great mix of animation and live action, and it brings classic novels to life.

It isn't aging well. I really enjoyed this when I was 11-12 years old, but kids these days are likely to be bored, and even I have to admit that there are better options in the same vein.

The characters were pretty unlikeable, but the concept & effects were excellent, and even the story was basically great. Just hard to deal with how much I disliked the protagonists.

As far as kid's fantasy, why does this need to exist when we have The Neverending Story?

I think this movie gets an unnecessarily bad rep. I liked it a lot as a kid, it's got some great actors in it, and it really helped to get me interested in books over time.

Remember seeing this at the cinema as a nipper! I liked it then, but it certainly wasn't one of my favourite childhood films. An average kids movie at best.

Woohoo I love cartoons about books! This could be worse, but it feels like a missed opportunity. It wouldn't have been all that hard to slip in a few literary jokes to keep adults entertained, but I guess the writer were terrible??

Easily the least insufferable thing to directly result from the 1990s' "reading is cool!" push. Nothing here is likely to appeal to adults, and even as a kid I found it merely tolerable.

Same as everyone, I've watched it when I was little. Throughout the years, I've remembered little parts from the movie, that made me happy and optimistic, when I was down. However, I won't watch it again, because I don't want it to be ruined by my grown up mind. I'll just stay with the happy feeling from all those years ago.
