What is like to live in the world of painting? There are characters that are already painted and colored, others who still need to be colored up, or haven't been drawn yet. It's a parallel world with its own rules and various threats. The adventures of this surreal world of castles, forests, and characters whose differences lie in the degree of their creative making are some of Le Tableau's attractive features. (bafici.gov.ar)

Conceptually, Le Tableau is nothing new, but it's a sweet film, filled with beautiful animation, and some quiet, important truths.

Very sweet movie that conveys that serves as an allegory to human existence. Beautiful rendering and a nice surprise

Although the film starts with a facile, almost simplistic allegory, it proves an interesting and compelling rumination on inequality and ontology. Although the ending overdoes the religious overtones a bit, the film deftly sells its egalitarian message. On top of that, it looks real pretty.

I get frustrated by movies that are thoughtful and creative and imaginative on a visual level, and then slot in rather generic stuff for plot and character. The main story feels like a combination of a half-baked Pixar premise with a mediocre X-Men plotline, but wrapped around it is color and beauty. And the music! Sigh.

It has somehow an arrhythmic tempo. Partially exciting, mostly boring. The stylistic aspects could have been more thoroughly planned and executed.

The Painting is charming and delightful in its characters and animation, though at times the film does suffer from a slower pace. Thematically, the film straddles between class struggle and existential musing, not substantially exploring either, but the idealistic (or simplistic) ending fits the 100 minute runtime and ends on a positive note. Switching between the French and English dubs, it was interesting to note the maturity in the former versus more warmth and whimsy in the latter.

I am a sucker of indie animated movies with unique art styles and oh boy this is beautiful. The story is simple but I really enjoyed it, such a treat. Who painted the painter? Will never know :)
