The ideas of the songs and sound design is great, but otherwise this is a dud. The actual songs are not that great, and it isn't helped by nearly all of them being sung horribly. The plot is simplistic and uninteresting and the chemistry between the leads is nonexistent. As usual Doris Day is a void of charisma and this time she has no strong leading man to make up for it.

Lack lustre and forgettable, unconvincing characters even for a musical.

What i at first diagnosed as merely late-period musical desperation eventually reveals itself to be a much more complicated (and problematic to critique) disparity between cynical Broadway sophistication and happy-go-lucky Hollywood naivete, resulting in perhaps the most unwieldy and hugely uneven musical imaginable, in which wonderful Bob Fosse dance routines brush up against the most vacuous treacle imaginable and manic, knife-wielding comedy literally sits side-by-side odes to consumerism.

A few good moments, but overall uninspired.
