Don't be fooled, for the abysmal score is not hyperbole, but actually a magnificent achievement. Very rarely does a historical movie get so many things wrong and be so offensive doing it. On a darker more serious note, this follows the American narrative, the one that we were actually taught in school, to the goddamn punctuation. I don't want to be reminded about that.

Taking a brief break from his blockbuster-style disaster porn, Roland Emmerich tried his most serious effort at creating a legitimate Steven Spielberg-style history blockbuster, John Williams score and all, however it's still Roland Emmerich...So instead we get this gloriously cheesy, melodramatic, historical mess, which they actually showed to us in my 10th grade US history class, just so my teacher could talk over it to point out what's wrong. Let's be honest, if you want history, read a book.

American Patriotic garbage. Apparently only the British had slaves and only the British were jerks according to this movie. Basically the American version of Braveheart except that this is terrible.

I adore this film for much the same reasons others loathe it - namely the hilarious and awesome hack job it makes of American history, the mustache-twirling supervillain Brits (Jason Isaacs is GODLY here), and the awesomely cheesy melodrama. Fucking blast of a flick. When Gibson charges the Brits at the end wielding a billowing American flag and with that John Williams music swelling, holy shit, is that the good cheese.

See, the British were over there to kill everyone. Because the ultimate goal of the Redcoats was to tax a bunch of charred corpses. Good thing Mel Gibson saved everyone from those psychos.

Hollywood shlock, but not horrible as far as shlock goes. Gibson proves he can be a rather competent actor, and the battle scenes are at least well done.

Emmerich's attempt at a prestige film falls flat due to a heavy-handed screenplay, uncomfortably straddling popcorn fare and an apparently serious minded (but historically suspect) depiction of the Revolutionary War. Full-throated jingoistic fist pumping mixes uneasily with at least one troubling depiction of a savage war crime, not helped by Isaac's overripe snarling villain. Worth watching for Gibson, whose deeply felt performance communicates this flawed man's grief and anger.

Overlong and self-indulgent, The Patriot's desire to be Braveheart 2: American Boogaloo unfortunately seems more important than making it a good movie. Ledger, Gibson, and especially Isaacs turn in good performances, but the over-reliance on melodrama overshadows any points the film tries to make about the Revolution or war or morality. The lack of historical accuracy isn't great either, especially in how it simplifies the entire conflict into black and white terms.

The Patriot is an excellent film that captures American patriotism. The film captures a man's journey through time, his loyalty to his country, his struggles to raise a family while dealing with the death of his late wife. The viewer can connect with characters, feel the pain, joy, defeats, and victories of the continental army. The movie had a few historical flaws in it, but the movie progressed very nicely. It was truly a work of art, and was an enjoyable from the beginning to the very end.

Such a shame that the foremost movie about America's greatest moment stars an Aussie Catholic and is really nothing more than a blockbuster along the lines of Pearl Harbor. When is Hollywood going to stop ruining important events with crappy films!!!! Because of this movie, I wish the British would have won the stinking war!!!

A couple of good action scenes and a fairly earnest performance from Mel Gibson and countered by ridiculously cheesy melodrama at times, an excessive length, and a dumbed-down screenplay that makes the British essentially bullies and the Americans heroes. It is kind of entertaining, but this kind of over-simplification doesn't leave much else to work with.

An exceptionally over-dramatic and corny movie. The fight scenes are decent but how many times did it feel like Braveheart when we are shown Gibson pumping up the men? I have expected him to come into that final battle with his face painted blue and red while the ex-slave was yelling "FREEDOM!" beside him. The over-vilifying of the British is rather hilarious as well. Despite all the flaws there are some cool scenes during the war and I enjoyed Ledger in it.

It's kind of hard to take this seriously with all the cliches, and the ridiculous "stab the bad guy with the American flag". Didn't Mel use that as a joke about bad movies in The Simpsons? Oh, and let's not forget the over-use of slow-motion. This is Roland Emmerich, after all.

I love everything about this movie. It showed just how close the war was to homes. My favorite scene is when Gabriel is standing on the second floor and watching the battle in the yard. Great story and scenes. Mel Gibson does a superb job acting in this movie. This is one of the few movies without sex as a major theme. I like to be movies to be laytone with sex, or none at all. There is a lot of violence that keeps this from being a family-friendly movie.
