The Patsy (1964)
When a star comedian dies, his comedy team, decides to train a nobody to fill the shoes of the Star in a big TV show (a Patsy). But the man they choose, bellboy Stanley Belt, cant do anything right. The big TV show is getting closer, and Stanley gets worse all the time. (imdb)

The Patsy proves that The Bellboy was no fluke and that Lewis really did have a special gift for unusual comic staging as well using colour to enhance humour. While the laughs are scattershot, there are plenty of clever ideas, and when the jokes land they do so with full force. There is a brilliant wordless flashback sequence, a hilarious scene of a clumsy Lewis in an antique filled room and ironic meta moments that demonstrate his understanding of the medium's inherent artifice.
