The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
Zak, a young man with Down syndrome, runs away from a nursing home where he lives in order to chase his dream of becoming a professional wrestler and attending the wrestling school of The Salt Water Redneck. Through circumstances beyond their control, Tyler, a small time outlaw on the run, becomes Zak's unlikely coach and ally.

Didn't really have a heartwarming effect on me since I personally feel these movies are a bit exploitative. Didn't like the scene with the face painting. That said, Shia LeBeouf and Dakota Johnson put in good performances. Good music. Fav scene: Salt Water Redneck rolling in with his awesome car.

Strong performances by Gottsagen, LaBeouf, Johnson & Church combine with an authentic deep-south atmosphere & a heartwarming narrative to make for a very enjoyable, very raw-feeling dramedy. Believable characters & a strong message make up for the occasionally too-convenient plot, and the statement being made never really feels hamfisted or overdone. The story itself isn't extraordinary, but there's just so much heart to the whole thing that it's hard not to like. Worth a watch.

It's not its depth, but its charm that has resonated with me. This is a terrific portrayal of a troubled runaway finding the right kind of person to give him the correct sense of responsibility and identity that he needs. A delight, if not particularly as unpredictable (and ergo life-like) as it could be.

Spoiler (kinda): I like movies that don't try to be what they're not. Tyler's character doesn't become a nowise life guru, Eleanor doesn't quit her job to seek adventures after suddenly discovering her free spirit. Life goes on as it always had and that's more than ok.

Such a pleasant surprise. This offers a pretty darn intoxicating combination of entertainment, warmth and poignancy, and attracted a tremendous cast. Bruce Dern and Dakota Johnson are especially good, and Zack Gottsagen's is a performance I can't say enough about. Ditto with fantastic work from Shia LaBeouf. There's a convenience in the storytelling which actually mirrors Zak's perspective (ie. "We should get a plane" to cross a river), intentionally or not. At times, uproariously funny. A gem!

A Mark Twain style buddy movie with some really good performances. "The Peanut Butter Falcon" is an inspiring and heart felt movie. Shia LaBeouf is especially good in one of the most memorable performances of his career. A sleeper hit at the box office, "Falcon" is a small movie with a big heart. A story about dreams, family and friendship. An adventure story that is funny, sad and very inspirational. A fun little indie film and one of the most touching movies of the year.

So far, this is the best film that I've seen all year. It was a real surprise. So much heart, so many moments of real connections, it made me want to cry, which is a super rarity. Plus, it's got an actual story goal that the characters are trying to achieve, so the narrative is also solid on top of everything else. This is a must-see.

This movie started off great. I thought it was gonna wind up being one of my top 10 movies of the year. Somewhere along the line, it just fell off a cliff. I'm not even sure why. Did it get too long? Did the plot change too much? Did everybody finding them and not returning with no consequences just not make sense? I dunno, it just fizzled for me. Based on the other reviews though, most people will like it. I have the lowest tier of any other rating with review.

Takes on too much to be wholly effective (Tyler’s flashbacks and the uncomfortable romance were unnecessary, and the latter kinda gross), but remains a touching road trip film. The central relationship is charming as hell: sweet and fun to watch.

Sometimes a movie comes along that might not technically be amazing but it is such a warm, sweet movie that it's fun to just go along for the ride. This is that. Gottsagen is the one most talked about--deservedly so--but everybody is good here. Doesn't break new ground from a narrative perspective but it was entertaining throughout, didn't overstay its welcome. The chemistry between Shia and Zack is great, and the relationship between the characters is wonderful.

The Peanut Butter Falcon is a sweet tale of hapless characters making a human connection as they try to move forward with their lives. There are a lot of indie film clichés within; the montages, the country-esque music, the cinematography overall. However, for a road (and river) trip movie, it’s surprisingly grounded with enough lightheartedness and whimsy to keep it entertaining. LaBeouf and Gottsagen have a ton of charm, and Johnson provides some needed balance.

Zack Gottsagen and Shia LeBouf are both great in this; it’s because of them that such a sickly sweet and formulaic story works at all. I like Dakota Johnson a lot in this too, although I hate almost every decision the writers made regarding her character. A passably nice 90 minutes that’s kind of a mess but too good-natured to dislike.
