Deliciously entertaining and wildly unpredictable, with at least two genuine surprise plot twists, and a nimble, skillful tone that veers deftly from full-on horror to police procedural to comedy and back again. Most gratifying is the way writer/director Nick Tomnay declines to answer all the questions that his story brings up; he's clearly a talent to keep an eye on. And, ideally, David Hyde Pierce's performance would be garnering some award talk.

Seeing Hyde Pierce as a completely unstable weirdo, air-sexing in the bathroom... yes, that's worth the price of admission. Still, the last half hour is such a change of what came before you can almost see the duct-tape where they spliced the two different films together.

A very cool psychological thriller that is elevated by Pierce's great charismatic performance. The vast majority of the movie is darkly humorous, suspenseful, and interesting. Unfortunately the final act felt a bit tacked on and didn't quite fit with what came before it. Definitely worth a watch even if it could have had smoother transitions and a better ending.

It's like the director had a lot of great ideas but only one chance to make a movie. He didn't know if he'd ever get to make another so he threw in everything he had. This movie is ALL over the place. It's uneven tonally and quite confused plot-wise. Pierce is good, but he comes across as not knowing how precisely to play the character or handle the material. There are remnants of about five different movie ideas here, maybe two of which would have been decent if given room to breathe.

i never would have thought that pierce would have done crazy so well. i knew little to nothing about this movie so every twist caught me totally off guard, something that doesn't happen to me often. good movie, better acting.

Surprisingly smart, funny and entertaining. Just as I thought the fun part was over, along came a twist and changed everything. Ending was decent, but a little lackluster. Still, surprisingly good movie.

Pierce's wonderful tour-de-force performance (Niles Crane meets Annie Wilkes) carries uneven thriller, which manages to be interesting by never quite going where you expect. Generally good performances by the rest of the cast (including an unexpected cameo by Reddy) and interesting directorial flourishes, but it is Pierce's film all the way.

David Hyde Pierce is awesome, but other than that it's a pretty mediocre psychopath with a twist kind of movie.

As most have said and will say, David Hyde Pierce was awesome in this movie. It was a hell of a lot of fun to see what would happen next, as I say with many movies, dont take it too seriously, you'll only diminish the entertainment value if you overthink it all.

Pierce carries a film that can't decide what it wants to be. I think most would agree that the "Perfect Host" being just that is the compelling and totally enthralling subject, but the rest of the various plots are a little too much. Still, the twists are pretty fun and Pierce is fantastic.

I was expecting a tame thriller, and was surprised by the intensity of the first act. But let's be straight: it's a three-act film, and the transitions from act to act are pretty jarring. David Hyde Pierce does manage to tie it all together, though.

Very trippy and absurd movie with several left-turns in plot and tone. Not a great movie by any means but It is great to see David Hyde Pierce in a role like this. He's very fun.

This movie was like eating a Sun Chip. Like a regular potato chip you're almost ashamed you like this movie. However its a Sun Chip which means it isn't so bad you totally regret liking it. The movie is definitely all over the place, but David Hyde Pierce really does a nice job of pulling the whole thing together. It would be easy to write this movie off, but just remember its a Sun Chip. Give in to David Hyde Pierce's performance and enjoy.

Ratings still confuse me. 75 should be pretty good but I think I got started by rating movies I recalled which, of course, some of my favorites so I had very few low scores. This rating of 76 means, to me, that it's good, solid film with some cool twists. Really entertaining and engaging. I wanted to write that in defense of 78 perhaps reflecting a below average movie. I recommend this film to anyone who likes offbeat stories esp with two men matching wits.

David Hyde Pierce's performance is nearly immaculate as his portrayal of a mild mannered upper class LA gentleman submerges into deranged psychopathy (albeit somewhat playful given the delicious circumstances) complete with an entourage of imaginary dinner guests serving as a Greek chorus of sorts. Perhaps it's unfair to take such a playful caper seriously, although it's worth noting that the backstory, sloppily told in flashes backward, is piecemeal at best and poor writing at worst.

This kind of feels like two movies smashed into one. The story of the bank robber, his relationship with his girlfriend, and the investigation by the cops is one movie, and the whole "dinner with a psycho" story is the second movie. And they're practically two different genres. The way they tried to intertwine those two stories is pretty weird, and the final scene seems like it was going for a clever way to tie everything up, but it doesn't make sense if you think about it for half a second.

The less one knows about this cantankerous thriller starring a career-best performance by David Hyde Pierce the better. A full relish of its thrills and ironies lies in its revelations, mainly those regarding his unpredictable, many-sided character who I won't soon forget.

David Hyde pierce was incredible...his full tilt unhinged performance was perfect and in combination with one very original twist i was shocked, entertained, enthralled by this wild film. It does wrap up in an almost mundane way, but all the precedes the ending is still fully worth it. Laughed regularly at the dark humor

The Perfect Host is ridiculously implausible, but Pierce's performance carries the film as it takes weird and unpredictable turns. Tomnay's film is a mess, especially in regards to the narrative and tonal shift just after the halfway mark. Fortunately it's well-paced, short enough and with a fitting ending, remaining entertaining through (even if it's a bit frustrating at points). Pierce provides almost all the comedy as he swaggers through the film, while Crawford struggles to elicit sympathy.

Weird and fun , but interesting still as one is left wondering what will happen next. They should have however cut the ending a bit earlier as it seemed to defeat the last surprises a little, but oh well!
