Lerman kills it, hitting all the right notes as the (try not to vomit) misunderstood outsider searching for acceptance. The character could have been a terrible cliche; it's to Lerman's credit that he is not. Miller nearly steals the show and again defies stereotypes. Some eye-rolling earnestness, yes, but overall quite funny and always sympathetic to those who live and mean well. Saw it with an audience packed with teens and was delighted that they responded to it. Maybe there's hope after all?

An omega male wet high school fantasy, where young, troubled introverts actually break out of friendzone and get to shag their dazzling crushes. If during your time since high school you've managed to outgrow your pussiness, this movie will pull you right back into it. Add to that the standard SJW undertones: child abuse in a christian family, gays are cool people who get persecuted by the bigoted society and so on and so forth and you'd get the full package.

This was an good movie. The leading star is really good as is the supporting cast. So it's a bit cliched in the script but that's forgiven for the excellent cast and a working screenplay. Good music. Good work from all, and worth watching for that and fornhowndown to earth it is.

Totally unbelievable. This "freshman" looks about 22. I totally understand why he's so unpopular! He's handsome, kind, funny and smart, exactly the kind of kid who's always the outcast! Let's wring our hands for him, as he makes out with hotties.

Dear crew, this is your captain chbosky speaking. I would like to draw your attention to the irritating period that is coming of age, the trials of existence and...aaah fuck this. More gays! Put in more gays! And parental abuse! Family abuse! Domestic violence! Molestation! Death! Accidents! Suicides! Emma, look alive and free! Spread those arms! Logan, gimme a "life is cruel but oh so beautiful"-line! And someone crank up the bowie for christ's sake!!! Yeeeeah, this is some deep shit!

I identify very much with the main character so it's easy for me to love this movie. It's good to see a film about these kinds of teenagers; the ones who show an earnest interest in things like literature and music and strive for a deeper understanding of life. Even if people dismiss this as pretentious or label the kids as overly indie, this is as much a real group of kids as any you'll meet in high school. Their pain is real, their growth and maturation is real. Also, Ezra Miller is amazing.

Never have I been so captivated by a coming of age story. This film had it all, from light hearted moments of friendshipand love, to very emotional scenes of abuse and depression. It is one of few films that actually gets growing up right, which is a tough thing to do for a film. It provides the three leads with powerful personalities and it soars from there thanks to three incredible and enaging performances from Lerman, Watson and Miller. A definite must see, you will not be disappointed.

One of my favourite movies of the year. One of the best? I'm not so sure; I doubt everyone will be as convinced by the borderline-saccharine conclusion, the early-90s alternaculture namechecking, and the Springsteenian sense of teenage grandeur as I was. But damn it: me personally? I loved this movie. It spoke directly to me. (more at Letterboxd)

As one of my favorite coming-of-age stories ever, I'm amazed this movie never became a pop culture touchstone like The Shawshank Redemption did. Both films take a known setting (prison & high school) and show a hero caught in its dehumanizing world try to overcome their emotional issues. The mood is great--especially the passage of time that propels the sweet love story & friendships. Kudos to the author for not just adapting his original novel into a screenplay, but also directing the film.

This movie felt too familiar. True it had a mental illness slant (which I suspect is a big reason so many people like it), but that plot point seemed unnecessary. Otherwise this is well-worn high school angst, coming-of-age territory. But my biggest complaint is how inauthentic - how written - all the characters seem, especially the main guy. When the script needed him to be shy, he was shy; when it needed him to be cool, he was cool. I didn't buy it. Why is this movie so highly regarded?

This movie was very contrived and poorly executed. The level to which the character's drama was penetrated was shallow, at best. At worst it seemed almost scary (and offensive) how easily some of the would-be austere material was treated with such a nonchalant attitude. For example, domestic violence was handled with a brief concern and a single remark - and then left alone. There's a difference between feigning depth and being deep... this film stands in a puddle while screaming about drowning.

Here is a high school that really looks like high school, with neither the comedy nor the tragedy exaggerated. I thought the sombre climax abrupt and not adequately prepared for, but--except for that--almost flawless. There are so many traps lying in wait for the makers of high school romantic comedies, and this film manages to avoid every one of them.

There's a likable story buried somewhere inside, but Chbosky often seems to go out of his way to make its execution as twee and insufferable as possible, and with an almost-weird fixation on shoving as much tragedy as possible into the protagonist's past. There were a few enjoyable scenes, including the first party sequence, and I totally love Mae Whitman (even if the character she's asked to play here isn't that great) so it's not a total loss.

Lerman is fascinating and the rest of the young cast is sufficient enough to move their characters along. While the script sometimes feels cliched I still think it was one of the better movies I saw in 2012. One thing, how do all these hip kids with "great taste in music" not know the song "Heroes"?

Similar to my last rating, 13 Reasons Why, in a few ways (and incidentally an inspiration for me to go on to watch this). It's the emotion, the characters and the musicality of the soundtrack that are the focal points of this. It is all wrapped in a script that does regrettably go a bit too cliché in places, but the essence of the film keeps it grounded.

it's difficult to understand how such a lame and banal presentation of high school could become so acclaimed. in saying this, there is something very genuine about the attempt. an intensely optimistic coming of age tale that cresendos into such ludicrous wild-eyed wonder that it could come from nowhere but the heart. but i just can't handle that much happiness. clearly high school wasn't like that for me. and i can't stand it when films use child rape to promote false wisdoms.

Carried by a few poignant statements about self-esteem and the trials of friendship, I remained unmoved by its totally unimpressive narrative, a safe harbor for angst-ridden teenagers to discuss their so called awesome tastes in music, concealing the very simple fact that this film has no story to tell. Performances vary across the board; Where Miller has a great career ahead of him, Watson should consider quitting hers while she's ahead as she's pretty much living off her Harry Potter image.

Fast-paced and quite endearing. Confidently directed by the author of the original novel, both when presenting and maintaining the personal perspective often key to coming-of-age tales but also in terms of tonal shifts, succeedingly integrating strands of tragedy into an amusing tapestry of teenage life in all its absurdity and wonder, hopefulness and horror, without stretching believability or overcaricaturizing high school stereotypes. Also, it's well-acted, particularly by the two male leads.

It's appropriate that when Watson says "Welcome2 the island of misfit toys" it plays like she's offering more than friendship, but entry in2 a powerful coven since none of the teens seem misfit-like. Despite their troubles, they're fearless, attractive, interesting & wonderfully kind. It's easy 2 feel jealous 4 the high school me. 4 those same reasons though, it's hard not 2 feel as devastated as the diffident Charlie does when he has 2 give the group up. Like them, this is funny, sweet & moving

I didn't look at this movie as a coming of age story like others do. It's deeper than that, it really is. The main character is mentally traumatized and its about him trying to have a life and people trying to surround him with love to let him know he matters. Knowing a little bit of that life, this movie hit me pretty hard. I felt like his capturing of those emotions was perfect, the cascading confusion that comes from trauma is something I thought was beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed this film.

It's most significant flaw is that the whole movie feels like Chbosky having a retrospective self-therapy session. Often the complex adult interactions and relationships attributed to many of the characters do not feel realistic when you also have teenagers spewing their angst through their tastes in music or being as ignorant as only teenagers can be. Chbosky never manages to balance these conflicting ideas satisfactorily. That said it packs some emotional weight and Lerman is supurb.

It resembles John Hughes, but it doesn't want to look like his work, because Chbosky is just willing to follow his depressed and disturbed teen in his first steps into ordinary things -- like kissing, hanging out, drinking, getting high and, finally, getting laid and feeling infinite, full. So, like the best stuff in teen cinema, this looks vivid, emotionally striking and, not in a phony way -- despite the easy pop references --, hopeful.

A throwback to all of those high school films of the 80s, the film really outshines its predecessors by confronting issues (mental illness, sexual orientation) that were unpopular back then. It's not a parody, but rather a full-fledged coming-of-age story with bounds of charisma, especially from the lead. My biggest drawback was that there was a significantly long lull somewhere in the middle.

Going in I'd heard that I shouldn't bother, and that reading Catcher in the Rye would give me the same experience. Dead fucking wrong, and I don't think there could be a worse comparison. The movie is full of likeable characters, and though it can be saccharine at times (and most of the things feel like they've been done before), I thought it was genuine and affecting throughout. Had the ending not been spoiled for me beforehand, I probably would've liked it even more.

The plot is entirely too neat (aside from a jarring development near the end), it relies on more than a few reductive high school cliches, and it could generously be described as disarmingly (if not nauseatingly) sincere, but with its heart entirely in the right place, I can't help but like it. The impression of high school as the bane of existence seems silly down the road, but that doesn't negate the validity of those emotions at the time - which the movie, to its credit, addresses.

I think I like this film more than I should. I have a soft spot for misfit movies. I usually find them relatable on one level or another. The film itself borders on sentimental oversimplification on several occasions. Nevertheless, Chbosky absolutely nails the nostalgic/melancholic feel he was going for and elicits completely organic performances from his young actors that makes it really hard for me to resist liking this flawed gem.

This goddamn thing had me from its first few seconds. It walks a fine line between Hughesian and Salingeresque and, for the most part, does so very successfully. It's about depression, but it's not melodramatic. It's about attaining confidence, but it's not cheesy or hokey (well, not too much, anyway). It's about the inescapability of teen angst, but it's not insufferable. All this, plus a snappy sense of pacing and well-rounded characters you root for. Pretty excellent.

I guess wallflower actually means "traumatized and needing drugs, Rocky Horror, and companionship to feel normal." That fundamental frustration with the film's perspective aside, it's a very touching and raw film about a troubled loner finding meaning in friends and family and all sorts of really well done stuff that captures a good essence of the inner turmoil of adolescence. So even though it wasn't what I hoped it would be it was very good at what it's trying to be.

I don't know if Hollywood invented it, but when a boy looks way to long at a beautiful girl and that girl glimpses back and it's not awkward or slimy as it would be in real life (by this duration) - that is probably the center of filmaking for me. It's a direct, heartfelt, and insanely emotional film about youth. Everything about it is well done. It's what is essentially a melodrama, but it grounds itself so well, and there's no way that anyone could not identify with these characters even a little bit. I have mixed emotions about this one. On the one hand, the sentiment is admirable and well-orchestrated. The casting is spot-on, and for the most part it's a great film. However, some of the edge comes from a place that seems a little short of genuine and the central love story feels like it's missing a little something. Que diabos de adolescentes são esses que não sabem quem é David Bowie? Mas o Ezra é muito divo mesmo.

Not brilliant but there is a lot to like about the film. The characters were relatable and overall the film felt more realistic than the majority of the coming of age films.

Uneven pacing at the start as some over hipster moments aside this is a good teen flick. Particularly when I found out it's set in the early 90's, my era when everyone was a bit of what would be considered a hipster now. I find it hard to believe that those kids wouldn't know Heroes by Bowie as well....

David Bowie's "Heroes" was the obscure tunnel song? LOL!

Suppose Hollywood focused on Ally Sheedy's and Anthony Michael Hall's characters from *The Breakfast Club*, mashing them together and examining their world, making these characters the protagonists, similar to *Nick and Norah's Playlist*, except a bit darker, as all the characters are broken in some serious way--and you get a good idea of what this film is like.

A coming of age story with a psychological twist, told by an amazing cast and a strong direction. The film is the example on how an adaptation should be done, and while it doesn't replace the book, it creates a new experience from the get-go. It will envelop you into the mind of the main character letting you feel the intricacies of his pains and happiness. The camera work is one of the strongest point of the film and it will never let go of your attention from the very start.

Some of the lines spoken in this movie surely would never be spoken candidly by human beings, but they still don't bring this emotional powerhouse down.

Much of Perks is made in fairly rudimentary fashion, but for a novice director it's admirable how well the film flows and lets you forget you're watching a movie. I may have only smiled more at Moonrise Kingdom this year. These characters are endearing as hell, each with something anyone who was once a teenager can relate to. Some critic called this film the Breakfast Club of this generation; I can completely get behind that idea. In fact, I think I'll champion it from now on.

This was actually a really great movie. The soundtrack is really really good and the story is touching. Not perfect but it was great still. Miller and Lerman were great in this. Watson not so much but she didnt bring it down. For a teen-angst high school flick this is deep, interesting, and wonderful... especially for a psychology and english nut, like me. Very relatable, adorable, and real. I loved it.
