This was disappointing. Peter Sellers was funny, but that couldn't save the movie for me. The first third was quite boring and I couldn't believe the connection between the princess and Sir Charles. I grew to dislike most of the characters, the Phantom and the princess especially. Why should I feel tickled by her escape from the rebels that wanted to seize the monarchy's ill-gotten treasure?

Should be more focused on Clouseau and less on boring, long dialogues among the other characters. Still, is a pretty funny and elegant first Pink Panther entry by Sellers and Edwards.

As funny as Peter Sellers was, and as cool as Friz Freleng's title sequence was, this movie really was terribly boring and offensive. I don't mean in the usual racist/sexist way of auld hollywood, but there was this hundred foot tall FUCK THE POOR sign in the background, which is never ever taken away. Hell, the only middle class character in the movie (Clouseau) gets thrown in prison for a crime he didn't commit so some rich douchebags can go on being rich douchebags. Frighteningly uncool.

This is a Peter Sellers movie struggling to break out of a David Niven one. Sellers' scenes are hilarious, a real sign of greatness to come from his character in the future, but when the main plot kicks in you'll be fidgeting. Unless you're a completist, I say skip to A Shot in the Dark.

I'm torn on this. It drags terribly in the beginning, and there's not enough of Clouseau, but I'll be damned if the last hour of this isn't utterly hilarious. The zebra, the car chase, the gorilla robbery, the bedroom mix-up.. Fantastic. Niven and Cardinale are incredible as well as Sellers. Not perfect, but it's a damn good laugh if you can just get through the beginning. And, of course, the score and opening animation are great.

There are some classic moments to be sure but this simply isn't Peter Sellers's best film. The ensemble performances are severely lacking making Sellers' brilliance (as Clouseau) seem totally out of place and bizarre. The viewer spends half the film laughing and the other half wondering when Clouseau is going to be onscreen again.

I did mostly enjoy this. Peter Sellers knows how to do physical comedy in a way that nobody does it today. Unfortunately, he's more of a supporting character. David Niven is the real focus of the movie. At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I was actually fairly confused by this movie. Perhaps it is because I watched it over the course of two days, but there was a point where three people were dressed up as gorillas when I had no clue what was going on.

About ever other Pink Panther movie after this trumps it tremendously. The biggest two problems are: 1. Peter sellers has very little screen time, and 2. The entire movie is drawn out and boring (with long inconsequential scenes to boot)--an abbreviated version with every interesting scene would last about ten minutes.

The original and best. The capers of a French detective who only wants to solve the heinous crime of stealing a jewel is smarter than he dimwittedly and bumblingly appears. This version of Clouseau is far more intimate, a modest and romantic man without much of the slapstick arrogance that defines his later self, and I for one appreciate the difference. This film is very different to the other Pink Panther films, and although it lacks the characteristic humor, it has a sense of class and a classic plot that only A Shot in the Dark could equal.

The first film of the legendary series, "The Pink Panther" is a brilliant movie that showcases Sellers's unique talent of mispronouncing and paramount comical timing, a comedy filled with eternal jokes and successive gags. I've watched this film tens of times and it remains an ingenious comedy that is able to liberate the most genuine and unforced laughter. This is easily a one-man show but one should also mention the rest of the performances and the excellent score that includes THAT tune.

Some hilarious slapstick, some not so hilarious and too many long sequences with barely an attempt an comedy. Niven, as usual, is quite good at playing the suave thief but it's the lack of comedic moments for his character, as well as the supporting characters, that lets the film down. Sellers is on song and he, and his character, save it from being a dud.

It probably wasn't as funny as I was hoping for, but I enjoyed it enough. It got a couple of chuckles out of me, but it wasn't hilarious or anything. Not nearly as good as A Shot in the Dark but still a fun flick. I thought the ensemble worked very well with balance being provided throughout all members of the cast. Each had an opportunity to shine. It's dry and not as funny as it could have been. Capucine giving Robert Wagner a skiing lesson and pretty much all of Peter Sellers were golden.

Since the later movies were acknowledged so personally with Clouseau, it's simple to overlook that he was just one in an ensemble at first. If not for Sellers' hilarious pratfalls, The Pink Panther could be viewed as a fertile caper movie like Topkapi, Gambit or Grand Slam, which is exactly what makes the movie so funny. It functions as its own straight man, while Sellers gets to play malefactor.

While it's a touch too long and there aren't a great many laughs to be had, it's still amusing throughout and Edwards' light touch ensures its enduring charm and appeal. The music and costumes are excellent and the performances are pretty good on the whole, with special praise reserved for Sellers, who's simply outstanding as the film's iconic buffoon, Inspector Clouseau.

Don't like to be overly harsh, but honestly this was just awful. So many long, terribly written scenes that left me completely baffled as to whether they were meant to be... funny? titillating? utilitarian [w/r/t plot]? poignant? or what. As far as I can reckon out, it was a sex comedy, w/out the sex, & nearly w/out the jokes [& I don't mean -good- jokes, I mean -any jokes-], excepting the amazingly uninspired physical comedy [& I love Pynchon and Buster Keaton!]. Oh, sorry, It's a "classic."

Chaos!

This is amusing - the first in a series of films. Inspector Clouseau doesn't feature much in this initial film and the film is less action oriented, with most scenes for the first hour or so taking place in a bedroom (hotel room?), with Sir Charles Lytton (played by David Niven) schmoozing a young lady. It did feel a little bland to start with, although it became more amusing in the 2nd half, when there's a costume party and some of the more comic, farcical type comedy/plot elements come out.

The first film in the PINK PANTHER series is interesting, because it's not like the others. Sure, Clouseau is in there and Peter Sellers kills it in the role, as he normally does, but the film as a whole isn't as funny. The subsequent sequels dive more into the antics and slapstick stuff while this was more of a romantic comedy mystery, which a lot of the jokes fell flat for me and in general, I just found to be super slow and boring. It had it's moments...but there weren't many

The Pink Panther holds up pretty well. Peter Sellers' Inspector Cleuseau is iconic. I am not sure if Dick Van Dyke pulled from this character or if Sellers pulled from him but the physical comedy is pretty similar. The story is an interesting caper with some very interesting characters. David Niven's Pink Panther is smooth but not unstoppable. Wagner is an interesting addition but I'm not really sure he's needed in the film. Capucine is gorgeous - a true movie star.

This series really doesn't get off on the best foot. The first half is extremely dull, and the scenes between Niven and the princess are especially interminable. Considerably more grounded than its much sillier sequels and probably the best of the lot. Most of the film is more "fun" than "funny", but the setup is satisfyingly elaborate and whenever the humour peaks it peaks high. The staging of the bedroom scene is top tier situational comedy, and I'm not sure any third act tickles me as much as the fancy dress stake-out. That and the aftermath that ensues is gold.
