A bit of a slow burn as our heroes methodically put the pieces together, but overall a solid early zombie movie with that unmistakable Hammer atmosphere.

Pretty decent pre-Romero zombiemovie. The zombies are well made and more creepy than most haiti-voodoo zombies. Also it is not without the social commentary that has come to be affiliated with the genre later on.

One of the few good Hammers that doesn't feature Cushing or Lee. A good metaphorical illustration of the traditional British indifference toward the working classes

Hammer's take on the pre-Romero zombie picture is fun and classy. As I've come to expect from Hammer, the film is masterfully shot. The sets are simple but well done, and the zombie makeup is decent (aside from the shots where the actors are clearly wearing masks). The acting is impressive all around. Carson is great in his villainous role and Morell plays a sympathetic protagonist. It could have used a little more pre-climax zombie action, but that's a minor quibble.

Yeah, classic Hammer. But not classic classic. Fans of the studio will relish this one, but it’s not going to be an introductory piece for newcomers. I wish more happened, but there’s some blazing moments of glory and so many tropes I love from the studio that I enjoyed it

I'm not very familiar with the "Hammer-horror", but this was an exquisitely slick fucking flick right here! Although it feels very methodical and steadfast in structure and upright in tone, there's (for example) suddenly a remarkable nightmare-sequence turning up in the middle of the film, and with its imaginative use of light and solicitous framing it totally steals the show. Tasty as hell.

I might have been a little slow to pick up on what later seemed like obvious clues, but I found the mystery as to what the villain was using the zombies for compelling. The lead hero, Andre Morrell, even more so. Not sure what happened to him but he's got Cushing's charisma. Even better the script establishes him as a distinctively irritable & playful hero from the start. There are also some genuine surprises in how evil the bad guy's goons behave & how effectively creepy the zombies are shot.

The enjoyable missing link between "I Walked With a Zombie" and "Night of the Living Dead" with some fine ideas and a strong and surprising story.

I think Fulci was very much indebted to this film.

Leave it to England's venerable Hammer Studios to create a cautionary tale about rampant capitalism using rotting zombies.

Starts brilliantly with a Hardy-esque bleakness but ends up just another Hammer; that weird mix of really high and really low production values.

A solid film in the Hammer House of Horror catalogue. A few of my relatives, when watching the film on Halloween weekend, thought it was cheesy and wooden, but personally it's an interesting and engaging period zombie film which has dated far less than some horror movies from even only a few years ago.

Box Obras-primas do Cinema Coleção Estúdio Hammer Volume 2.

It's interesting how utterly obsolete all previous zombie movies were rendered by Romero's original Night of the Living Dead, and on the timeline, I think that came just after The Plague of the Zombies. Post NotLD ones are gory, often action-oriented political allegories, while Hammer's TPotZ is strikingly similar to quaint old American horror films, just more "gentlemanly" because it's British. It isn't any good, but you could do a lot worse with old horror movies.

Storywise a shameless ripoff of "Dracula" by way of "I Walked With A Zombie", but it's stylishly done in typical Hammercolour and features some really neat scenes for its time - the graveyard scene in particular.
