Drama

Explores a typical day in the life of a decidedly atypical teen named Agnes. Some folks have the luxury of living each day to the fullest, but for Agnes every day is a grueling struggle for survival: Her mother is strung out on drugs, her home has been overrun by degenerates, and her only father figure is a pimp. For Agnes and her two younger sisters, this particular day will be marked by both tragedy and triumph, but which will resonate most in the days and weeks to follow? (imdb)

The Poker House is a film that takes the wost situations that one can face at the age of fourteen and compresses them all into one day. Is it necessarily believable that all of this can happen in a single day? No, but it doesn't matter. You forget the implausibility and become emotionally invested in the lead character and her problems with the world. This film will hit home for people who experienced something like this, or can empathize with the situation for whatever reason.

A lot of actors playing roles that they are thrust into a lot. Jennifer Lawrence is the stronger older sister who is street-wise and tough. Moretz is once again sexualized at a very young age, which keeps happening to her. Selma Blair plays a cracked out prostitute and terrible mother to three young girls. The movie has some tense scenes and the characters go through a lot. It's dark and depressing. The ending is pretty lame. I did like the follow-up during the credits, it changes your view.

Jennifer Lawrence is a better actor than many others twice her age. The story however is horrendous and depraved. Selma Blair was not a good choice, though she gave an admirable performance, was not convincing as a desperate drugged out prostitute. Some of the storytelling was weak. The message of the movie is a cautionary tale of what taking drugs and living a fast life will get you, and about children overcoming adversity. A believable yet depressing story that in the end felt incomplete.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch this movie but it had Jennifer Lawrence so I figured I would watch it and turned out that the movie wasn't horrible also Selma Blair was awful.

Pretty typical "trailer trash mother has three wisecracking, worldly-wise kids who have a heart of gold and look after each other against all the odds" stuff .. seen it a million times before ... 'lets muscle in on a basketball game', 'wherever we go everyone we know looks after us', "let some local hoods look after my bike while I have a job to do" "Get younger sister to safety when things turn nasty". Decent, but nothing going on here which you wouldn't be able to work out from the synopsis

A bit of a chore to watch. The first 45 minutes were a bit hard to get through. After that, it improved in terms of immersability. However, I felt that the story was incoherent; it did not go anywhere, particularly in the first 45 minutes. Scenes felt tacked on for no reason. The characters were not fleshed out, were clichéd, but the acting overall was pretty good. However, this did not lead to me caring about the characters in the film. Furthermore, the soundtrack was good. The ending was lame.
