The Portuguese Woman

Loneliness, class and gender dynamics clashing patriarchy ugly interests -- war over women, peace, love and everything else -- in a hypnotic, slightly hostile and kind of fatalist, pessimistic series of moving paintings -- mostly at daylight, with deep focus, characters softly, smoothly moving within a frame.

Solid recreation of different european society; the plot develops naturally with a theatrical style of scenes and dialogues. The main character goes through many changes: an outsider, the wife that waits her husband, the heretic that uses witchcraft to try and save her husbands life, also a vengeful woman and a suggested adultery. The photography is gorgeous. The scene with the Bishop is brilliant - peace might be worse than war.

A bit too boring for a film about boredom, but cute really
