For a story that reeks of self delusion and megalomania, this turned out to be nowhere near the science fiction examination of the term 'going postal' I had hoped for.

A very long movie of more than 2 hours and a half, a sort of "Mad Max movie" but this time with K.Costner. The first hour was good but then the story it's getting boring with a final disappointing end. I like more "Dances with Wolves" which is one of the best of K.Costner.

On politics as Austinian performativity: seems to want not only to thematise such questions but to enact them, to provoke through cinematic means some rebirth of the American spirit. The militaristic aspects of this agenda suggest it is some kind of “neoconservative” exercise, unless, that is, one credits the notion put forth by the film that its actual preoccupation is the reconstruction of the possibility of genuine “communication”.

This makes Waterworld look like a masterpiece, and seems like the real reason why Costner's career took such a hit. I kept thinking that the gap of time between 1997 and 2013 wasn't big enough for seemingly everyone to have forgotten the pre-war world. Some very minor enjoyment to be derived from a bunch of Fallout villains who religiously watch The Sound of Music.

Costner directs this 3-hour lumbering snoozefest where he casts himself as a post apocalyptic Jesus. He concludes "Dances With Myself" with a worship scene of a bronze statue of himself. Holy f**k!!! Is it possible to be more pretentious and full of yourself than this guy???

It's a big budget three hour Hollywood epic about the US postal service... as an allegory of the Civil War... in the post-apocalypse. Starring Kevin Costner? So it's kinda like Waterworld meets Titanic meets a Civil War movie. Worth a watch for the sheer unusual factor to it.

The Postman is the kind of bad that I would love to love but just can't, sorry Kevin. This, Costner's second Mad Max ripoff, is yet another ego-driven bore that is too well-made to be a joke yet too insanely self-serious to be fun at all.

Almost plays as a parody of this type of movie. Unfortunately, if it was supposed to be a satire, then it wasn't funny enough, and if it was supposed to be serious, then it is just god-awful. It is so self-preachy and self-important that it just comes off as a joke.

One of the (justified) poster childs for the overindulgent 90s star vehicle finds Costner upping the ante by stepping behind the camera as well - some admittedly stylish scene compositions can't compensate for a deadening pace, performances ranging from the stiff (Costner) to pitifully overblown (Patton) and some stomach churning hubris from its star-director - the bronze statue of the postman in action kind of hilariously sums up the movie as a whole!

Would've been two notches better if Costner had just tightened up the film. The runtime is unacceptable; it would be trivial to cut 10 minutes from each act and wind up at a reasonable length without sacrificing nearly any story.

When I was younger I wondered why people didn't like this movie. Well, years later, I have read the book, and I made it a goal to see this film again. It's horrendous. The acting is dry and poor by all but the horses and Olivia Williams, who actually does a great job. The cinematography though, is the worst I can think of in a major motion picture, and the sporadic use of slow motion makes me want to punch Costner in the ear. Total crap!

The Postman needs to edit itself: there are too many lines, scenes, and moments that contribute nothing to the razor thin plot the movie offers. So much of the dialogue is nonsensical that I found myself embarrassed. Worst of all, Costner paints himself as a bonafide savior in every way, and the other characters in the film unbelievably cherish every ridiculous line he utters. This is "ego first" filmmaking. Verdict? Trainwreck.

Possibly the weirdest film I have ever seen. Part satire, part Peter Pan, part romance, part civil war re-enactment, part Shakespeare admiration, part horse killing simulator . The progression of time is erratic and this makes it tougher to watch. There are so many absurd jokes here, some on purpose. The concept seems old-fashioned for a 1997 film. Also the slow motion grab of the mail is utter cringe and the movie is probably 1 hour too long.

I would even enjoy it for it's atmosphere and a view of a rebuilding society in a post apocalyptic world, if it just didn't go on and on. Seriously, how many endings can you have in a film? And every one worse then the last.

I admit, the evil guys who are big fans of Sounds of Music is a nice touch. However, I can't share any of that enthusiasm about the rest of the movie. It is corny, over-patriotic and worst of all, really dull. And that really takes a toll of a movie of almost 3 hours length. Sorry way to end a big Hollywood career, if you ask me.

It was very long but I liked much of it. Great cast. Excellent production quality & music. I must be a sucker for Kevin Costner & Olivia Williams. I got really tired of Will Patton & some of the other bad guys. Tom Petty stunk it up. It was a little preachy and the ending was saccharine sweet. However, I don't understand the extreme hate on this one. I guess I need to watch it again with some fresh eyes. (score tentative)

Biggest complaint is that Costner wanted to build as many aspects of this world as possible rather than allowing viewers to fill in gaps, so we are forced to sit through a heavily inflated runtime to see all the different towns in detail. The 3 hours are painfully long, despite the setting being interesting. Pattons villain is an out of place 1 dimensional tyrant. Theres something good here...costner just buried it...deep.
