The story in this movie deals with the perseverance of Spaniards to take back their country from the French who have conquered Spain under Napoleon as he marched over Europe. A huge cannon, perhaps the largest in the world at that time, is discarded by the army as they retreat from the French invaders. A "ragtag" group of Spanish loyalists find "The Gun" (C.S. Forester's book title) and begin to restore it so they may tow it across Spain to the French stronghold in Avila... (imdb)

A lot of beautiful shots of the Spanish countryside & some decent set pieces, but the script is unengaging and Sinatra's Spanish caricature is atrocious, serving only to make the rest of the actors look better by comparison. Like Sophia Loren as a Spanish fury, "The Pride & The Passion" is fun to look at, but nothing more.

Could be rename my gun's bigger than yours or Carry on Cannon.. Epic storyline, huge cast and good cinematography. Cary Grant is believable but that's about the good bits. Sinatra is not a believable Spaniard (think Manuel meets Speedy Gonzales) and the plot is one dimensional. The main uncredited character is the vast cannon which I really couldn't care about after the first 20 minutes

If you can get past the ridiculous casting, and I did as the film went on, it's a generally okay historical adventure flick. Not great ... not terrible. It mines a good deal of suspense over lugging this giant gun across Spain. What's less successful is the Grant-Sinatra-Sophia Loren love triangle. It's a shame because Loren is most convincing casting, but she has little interesting to do here.
