Frequently ridiculous, but Nick Nolte's superb performance cuts through a lot of the bluster.

Nolte and Streisand are spectacular in their roles, but ultimately the screenplay sinks during the third part of the movie.

It certainly isn't a bad film, but the last half hour or so is very dramatic and over-emotional. Most of the acting here is pretty good, in particular Nolte and his mother in the film Kate Nelligan. The story is decent and the way it is unraveled is pretty good. Nolte is the best thing here though. He is able to play his part seriously, but I felt he was very good at the comedic parts of his character.

Has some good moments but then has a totally stupid ending in which it turns into a Jon Bradshaw infomercial. Streisand gives us a lot of flattering shots of her own legs

I like Pat Conroy a lot. I'm not sure I would have liked this movie had I not already read and very much enjoyed the book. I'll say Nolte was great and Streisand could have been better (and definitely didn't need to direct) and leave it at that.

It's when the romance really kicks in that the narrative momentum shudders to a halt, and what was once an almost compelling character study suddenly turns into endless scenes of people embracing in front of a fireplace or a sunset, usually scored with music more adequate of a war epic.

a little oscar-baiting at times but a solid performance by Nick. Gets a little too lost in its own romance near the end.

A feelie. It's a well-conceived and well-played (by Nolte) character, a laughing-on-the-outside (or anyway wisecracking-on-the-outside) type, shaded in with the specific colorings of the South and what's dubbed here "the Southern way." But all of this is balanced and often outbalanced by the contributions of Streisand, who as co-star finds occasion to haul out most of her cute-and-kitteny repertoire, and as director does even greater damage with her unerring nose for soup.

One of the most inexplicable/worst films I've ever seen - now on Criterion!

Nolte's bombastic performance ranges from off the rails to quite good. What works in his favor is Streisand taming him, both as a character and literally with her subtle performance. Much of this feels dated and half done, but the scenes between the two leads are worth a watch.
