Frustratingly mysgonist and quizically sentimental, The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio is a mess in it's pacing, but does boast some entertainging and creative uses of the camera.

Even the efforts of the always wonderful Julianne Moore can't save this lifetime trash.

Old-fashioned and kinda sad, but very well written and acted.

Because I, too, was the victim of milk bottle mayhem, I was touched by this movie. And it's instructive to be reminded just how restrictive our mothers' and grandmothers' lives were.

"A rather schizo piece of filmmaking that is too busy to ever be dull, but the only Prize in the foreseen future for it might be the boob tube." - Jason Clark

Julianne Moore gave, once again, a flawless performance.

Likable enough family saga is worthwhile for Moore's deceptively complex portrait of an indomitable optimist, but the film wavers between taking an overly rosy view of its material with an attempt to deal head-on with the more serious story elements - a delicate tonal balance that doesn't quite work, especially as Harrelson is never convincing in capturing his character's wild mood swings. Somewhat like ANGELA'S ASHES, the ultimate misery depicted becomes a little tough to take at times.
