Gene Wilder is a genius, he elevates this to greatness single handedly. It seems like they rushed an ending but everything up to that was pretty sweet.

Excellent comedy that has funny yet compelling leads, hilariously ridiculous secondary characters, great sight gags, and a perfect execution of a solid premise. Mostel and Wilder have a great rapport, and the movie doesn't outstay its welcome.

One of the great classic comedies, and one of my personal favorites. The vulgar absurdity is too much to handle; "Don't be stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Nazi party!" Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder are, along with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis in Some Like It Hot, my favorite comedy pairing in any film. Mostel is especially memorable; sleazy, raunchy, and paranoid.

An absurd concept brilliantly executed, Mel Brooks' directorial debut is surely one of the greatest American comedies of the 1960's. Zero plays the sleazy shyster to pure perfection, while Wilder impresses in an early role as his reluctant accountant. Together they conspire to rip off investors willing to financially participate in an engineered flop. When their plans go awry, much hilarity ensues. The jokes come thick and fast and the humour is mostly timeless.

A fantastic comedy with an amazing final act. Mostel is hilarious but Wilder really steals it with his neurotic accountant character. So many great things in this movie and so much that will always stick with you.

A hard-luck producer (Zero Mostel) and a nebbishy accountant (Gene Wilder) team up to produce a lucrative flop. Naturally, everything goes right. Mel Brooks' first and probably best, a little shaky in technical terms but so funny and so enthusiastically performed that it doesn't matter; Mostel and Wilder are perfectly cast, Brooks' Oscar-winning script is almost totally quotable, and "Springtime for Hitler" is one of the great musical numbers of all time. One of the most delightful films of all.

The Producers is definitely Mel Brooks' debut, it feels amateurish in many ways. However, it also showed that he was capable of making some of the best comedies of all time. Springtime for Hitler might be the best fake play in all of film history.

A comedy classic pairs veteran comedian Zero Mostel, with a young Gene Wilder in a story as old as show business. Two Broadway producers set out to make a slam-dunk flop securing a huge profit through some "creative" accounting. Directed and written by Mel Brooks, the film won Best Original Screenplay at the 41st Academy Awards in 1969. This is the first film pairing of Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, who would go on to co-write and star in "Young Frankenstein"(74). Nominated Best Adapted Screenplay

In its day it was considered wildly vulgar . . . but the culture has jumped so far into vulgarity that THE PRODUCERS now seems tame and even a little sweet by comparison. Mel's best movie, if only because he gave his cast so much really juicy material to work with and then let them run with it.

Starting off with the two main characters getting to know each other, and also building character devolpment! Setting the scene for a hilarious ride that starts off with minor gags all over the place! Then at the end, have all the plots come togther, then backfire! Brilliant ending that keeps you laughing through the credits. This movie has it all, crooked bookie, run down broadway play producer, cross dressing gay director, Neo Nazi, and of course, a hippy Hitler. "An example of Smartz"!

Gene Wilder gives a great comedic performance, but I didn't really connect to the story. I found it took awhile to really get going and didn't care for some of the sexist and homophobic jokes. It gets better in the final act with the musical numbers and climactic payoff, but ultimately it was never anything more than slightly amusing to me.

Some of the attempted humor consists in loud shouting, and elsewhere a flamboyantly gay director is played for laughs. Suffice to say, much of this hasn't aged well. From the moment when "Springtime for Hitler" begins onwards, however, it picks up, with the deliciously zany setup blissfully overshadowing the dopey dialogue.

Brooks's first movie can hardly sit still with any idea for longer than stretches of a few minutes, and it runs low on fuel well before the finish, but the nervous, bullying, to-and-fro foraging for gag material turns up some of the heartiest laughs in recent history.

Very, very funny in places. Just the notion "Springtime for Hilter" is hilarious. I'm not sure what Brooks was thinking in removing L.S.D. from the current version, but he's clearly one of the best things in this movie. Drug humor not funny anymore, too 60's? Huh. Well, Zero Mostel is amazing and Wilder is well always great. And, my favorite part: "When you've got it, baby, flaunt it, flaunt it!"

I admit - i am not a fan of Mel Brooks' films. I usually found them of a bad taste. So I had really low expectations, and this film caught me of guard. I was really laughing for a couple of times. Scene where Bloom goes hysterical must be my favorite. But still, these few laughs aren't enough on the long run, because there is too much idiotic jokes. Second best Mel Brooks film after The Young Frankenstein, and I guess it's worth seeing.

Deliciously daring for its time, Zero Mostel is so oily he could power a small country. Great early Brooks with Gene Wilder being just so well cast as the neurotic Leo Bloom. Later stage shows and remakes may have plugged some of the limited deficiencies and given a new dimension with musical numbers but this is where it started. Just enjoy it. If you can't smile once through this there's no hope !

I actually think the remake is better. The original film feels rushed and the comedy feels forced. It also lacks the character development the remake had. Although Gene Wilder is better than Matthew Broderick overall I suggest you see the remake. Mel Brooks certainly does a better job the second time around.

This is one of Mel's finest films, and who can deny Gene Wilder? I never will. Never ever. This manages to take ridiculous humor and tone it down so that people that don't like Mel's style would still probably like this movie. Don't believe me. I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of Mel Brooks, but I've enjoyed bits and pieces of his work. I felt much the same about this one. It's a great concept, and it's fun, but it's simply not executed all that well. Brooks' direction isn't very good, and the script lacks a solid structure. I suppose it was his first film, though - he did improve. Gene Wilder was brilliant, but I found Zero Mostel irritating. Overall, it's a mixed bag, but it's worth watching.

What he's maintained, and what I feel---having grown up in a family of Brooks fanatics---is what makes a particular generation enjoy him so insatiably, is a pure audacity, mischievous delight, eagerness to leap any bound for a laugh. They'll say, "Ah, comedy today's all eff this, eff that, fart on this, have sex with that. It's all bad taste." And I say, look at your boy Mel. He knows better than any of them: Bad taste can taste the best.
