The Professor

A very mediocre film starring a very overrated actor.

Finally another good Johnny Depp movie! Loved that it was cut up in chapters and there were some masterful moments/speeches with the professor which I found pretty inspiring. The end was pretty weak though

I quite enjoyed The Professor for its acerbic wit and almost apathetic approach to carpe diem. The cast is decent, though none of the characters really leave an impression, which is ironic given the film touches upon leaving behind an intellectual legacy. Depp often mumbles but makes up for it with his charisma. His final goodbye to his daughter fell short of the emotional resonance it was going for, but the film ends on a very apt visual metaphor, which I liked. Sweet, funny, and a bit shallow.

I suppose Roberts chose an English Prof. in order that he would be able to use his superior grasp of language to impart eye-opening insight into impending existential discontinuation, but no, we found our Prof. apparently living life of "reckless abandon" by getting drunk, multi-gender screwing, listening to his buddy blubbering and driving across a cornfield. This was the least insightful, lazy & pathetic script I have come across. Even his daughter could be bothered to ask what illness he had!

worth a watch

Johnny plays well as usual, but this one is just not his profile I would say. I had unwanted comparision thoughts on the movie with pictures like "dead poet's society" and "what dreams may come". Movie ending is a bit weakish, as I have not felt any emotional collection with the protagonist. All in all a nice movie to watch, but surely not a masterpiece, which actually comes to your mind only by the ending.
