I don't usually like Netflix films. I usually find them rather mediocre, but sometimes, I like musicals, and you know what? I was pretty impressed by this film. Great music, great cast, and great message. I actually recommend this one

I enjoyed the first hour with its flamboyant sarcasm towards the genre, but along the way it turns into a film that expects to be taken seriously and fails spectacularly.

It's nice to have a modern musical leaning in to the vintage "show tunes" format (giving Streep the opportunity to belt out some tuneful ballads) and the good natured vibes of the cast go a long way to selling the material. Unfortunately the presumably literal translation of the show to the screen makes this a minor slog (especially in the back half) - a few cut numbers and some general tightening would have helped. Still it’s hard to not at least be a little swept away by the good intentions!

A solid 3 out of 5 stars. A feel good movie, which is what I needed tonight. I would have expected better numbers from such a cast, but whatevs. I liked it enough.

With nothing but peppy zazz between the film’s energetic numbers, the emotional beats feel disingenuous, absent the journey to earn them. It’s fun, but it comes across as off-puttingly shallow for its subject matter. Likely better on stage.

5 years ago the media would've celebrated this predictable but fun, energetic & sometimes moving big budget gay pride extravaganza, but now - bc of Woke ideology - they call it "homophobic" bc of Corden's allegedly too flamboyant portrayal of a flamboyantly gay character - a portrayal overseen by Woke actors & a gay director. The same people who fail to notice the irony that they're mocking actors who dishonestly virtue signal how Woke they are while presenting Indiana as filled w/ minorities.

There are big scenes with big musical numbers and a point about opening up and accepting people for who they are. It's long and a bit tedious when the main cast of celebrity characters deals with their own narcissistic tendencies. It wasn't bad nor was it spectacular. It could have been better but it had some likable performances.

Even with Streep slaying every scene in a Patti Lupone wig and strutting like Medusa from The Rescuers, this is too overloaded with mediocrity for her to bear. The whole cast is good (except maybe Kidman) with a surprising turn from Corden, but the film feels politically ancient and the production somehow looks simultaneously too extravagant and too cheap. As for the music, it’s fine, too. Nothing grating but no ear worms either. It’s fun while it lasts, forgotten once it’s over.

Full of Broadway in-jokes, I would have preferred to see a pro-shot with a Broadway cast. But this makes for a fun musical experience.

This film feels coldly calculated and tailor-made to sell as many tickets to musical theatre kids and Glee fans as possible. I appreciated the bright, campy & colourful mise en scene but for the most part the sentimentality feels forced & unearned, and its message isn't even particularly progressive for the 2020s. The musical numbers are all the most unremarkable generic type of Broadway songs possible. Streep was charming in every single scene she was in, but James Corden was insufferable.

Hearing the lyrics "changing the world one lesbian at a time" made it clear there was at least some self-awareness. Who'd have thought that it's based on a true story.

Nicole Kidman ah ah. Filmin sonunda, ayrımcılık yapılıp gay prom yapılıyor. James Corden'e koca lazım.
