A deep film that I'm sure to think more about afterward. Anne Bancroft demonstrates complex emotions and reminds me why she's a generational star with her expressions. Husband is likable but at the same time the manifestation of her problems. Fav scene: being confronted in the hair salon.

An incredible film, one which balances itself between naturalism and expressionistic film techniques to show the raw emotional issues in the story at their fullest. Anne Bancroft is captivating in the central role.

Searing, brilliantly constructed British black (very black) comedy about a marriage in disarray. Superb performances by Bancroft and the whole supporting cast. Hard to find, but worth looking for.

I was not prepared for this stunning Pinter-penned triumph. Certainly Bancroft's finest couple of hours and the likes of James Mason, Maggie Smith and Peter Finch turn in memorable nuanced performances as well. It belongs on any number of "Overlooked Gems" lists.

Original, complex and intense relationship drama shot in a close-up and starkly lit style which reminded me somewhat of Brief Encounter. Gets quite heavy, but the psychology is so genuine and recognizable, and the dialogue is just subtle enough, that it never seems melodramatic. Anne Bancroft and Peter Finch put their hearts and souls into their performances. Probably one of the best works by writer Pinter and director Clayton as well.

Serious competition in close-quarters, Sawdust & Tinsel style conjugal drama. The camera's contempt for personal space is met with Anne Bancroft's cold, despondent eyes, leaving the viewer with a sense of uncomfortable familiarity ..as well as personal responsibility. The best of three from Pinter, and another remarkable work from the tragically overlooked and undervalued Jack Clayton.
