The Purchase Price

An oddly entertaining little curiosity. It would be a dire affair if not for Stanwyck--her unaffected performance carries the picture. I don't think I've ever seen George Brent do anything comedic before, and I think I prefer him this way--his plight is really rather touching. And Lyle Talbot is just about the most likable gangster one could imagine. There are even a few pre-code touches here and there.

"Ya daffy little tomato, I'm bugs about ya"...lol Stanwyck is the whole show here; her star quality shines throughout ("I've heard all of the questions, and I know most of the answers"). Shlocky writing (and direction), in the manner of early Wellman programmers; they even come out of different studios, and they still all look the same. Brent either mugs or looks sullen--that's pretty much it. (Btw you ain't seen nothin' till you've met Clyde.)

This film shows us two things about Barbara Stanwyck: she can act and can't sing. All the men are cold and lecherous in this tale of a strong woman.

A bit of a Warner bros programmer, but charming nonetheless as a Barbara Stanwyck starring vehicle. Here she plays a chorus girl who leaves her nightclub boyfriend for a chance mail-order marriage to a farmer far away. And it's got it's awkward situations to get a few laughs. In this one it's not so much about what drama that happens around them that's important. It's more will they end up loving each other storyline. And do you think they'll disappoint us....?
