Expands on the very flawed but interesting-in-a-What-If-Scenario-kinda-way Purge setup by delving a bit deeper into the concept and its consequences. It's still too plotholey and doesn't go full bananas with the Purgeness, so it still feels like a missed opportunity. I want crazy chainsaw wielding hobos, elderly grumps with flamethrowers and crystal meth'd supersoldiers fighting it out in a theme park or something. I should purge my hopes of this franchise becoming worthwhile.

The Purge: Anarchy is a couple of notches better than its predecessor. It doesn't squander a great premise. Instead, it embraces it and explores it. It at least tries to have something to say, and while it might not be quite smart enough to say things most of the audience will know going in, at least it has ambitions and ideas. It also works quite well as a thriller, constantly keeping its audience engaged and in a mode of suspense.

I like that the franchise takes concepts like propaganda, manipulation & economics, and uniquely smashes them together. I like that it's more open-world, but I don't like that there isn't a stand-out "Polite Leader". That character is split between Big Daddy, "God", and... Capitalism. Don't get me wrong, I LIKE money as an enemy but, I guess I prefer a more singular villain. I do appreciate that the antagonists weren't just "entitled educated college kids" this time. Sets up nicely for a third.

A fairly vast improvement on the original, taking its cues from how Aliens evolved from Alien and changing from an insular home invasion thriller to a full-blown citywide action blowout. James DeMonaco still isn't an amazing visual filmmaker or anything, and you'll see a lot of beats coming, but this is much, much more ambitious than last year's Purge.

So wait... The government introduced the "Purge" as a means of "purging" the country of certain people, and conveniently called it the "Purge" so that people would know that they are "purging," as opposed to randomly killing for no reason. But then when people find out that the "Purge" is mainly meant to "purge" the land of those deemed "purgable" by the rich, people somehow feel deceived. Sounds like somebody needs a purgin'.

Not bad. I found it to be much more interesting than that first movie that left everyone so disappointed. Grillo is actually really good and I hope to see more of him. The movie fails with any social commentary or statement it's trying to make and the storytelling is fairly generic, but I was entertained.

I guess "The Purge: Fear of a Black Planet" was a little too much. This is an ehhhhn Escape From New York for about 25 minutes and that part's kinda fun. A breath of fresh air though compared to the dogshit original. I really want the next one to lose the story, make it some Altmanesque large cast of characters and have a lil background pay close attention themes baby nonsense going on because where they are heading with this is not interesting at all we just want to see people act bananas.

Until the credits, I had no idea--and I never would've believed--this came from the same mind behind the first film. Where the first film seems in love with its idea that killing the poor paves the path to prosperity, this sequel turns the idea on its head. Here, the Purge makes for an intriguing, if facile, symbol of income inequality, capital punishment, and gun deregulation as tools to keep the poor down. It also deftly displays the escalating, cascading power of revenge... and forgiveness.

I like it more than the original because instead of a horror movie they just decided to make it a mixture of Escape from New York and The Warriors (in terms of there being different, silly groups of people). Because of this, it was a lot of fun. The social commentary is very heavy-handed and at one point perhaps a little too blunt, even for me, but at least it was there. I think this will end up being a flick I deem "underrated" in years to come.

An improvement on the first because it takes out on to the streets. DeManaco shows he can actually direct pretty well when he's given the open space to flourish. The build up of the couple being followed around is done really well. It tries its hand a bit more at the politics inherently at play in a premise like this, but I would still say it's quite muddled and not really sure of the point it's trying to make. Overall tho it's a pretty decent little thriller.

Ahh, The Purge. What a great concept, in movie franchise terms, you know? I really enjoyed the first installment but I felt Anarchy took it up a notch. I'm curious about where they'll take it next. Will they venture outside the cities? Maybe a deeper exploration of the quasi religious organisations? Anyway, stay safe.

In my view, it's a slight improvement over the original. That doesn't say much, since the concept is still ridiculous in nature and execution, and the social commentary remains some of the most ham-fisted I've seen in any movie. They do however get to explore a few more fucked-up scenarios The Purge would entail, and that does make it a tad more fun.

Indefensible on any serious political level, the second film in what is presumably panning out to be a long standing franchise is far more competently made and features characters with a greater degree of psychological complexity. The choice to move the action outside was a smart one as it enables the viewer to get a real sense of urban chaos and consequence, while the themes of class conflict, income inequality and gun deregulation are handled more confidently. Still not great though.

Yes, it's less original than the first. It's got second rate actors too. But the original movie was just a shiny new home invasion movie with a new twist that was wholly unrealistic. It actually kind of makes sense to take the concept and throw it into an action/thriller and flesh it out a little bit. I dare say that "The Purge" makes a little more sense now, and it's certainly better than the first, that piece of crap belongs forgotten in the attic of long lost movies, smothered in cat urine.

This is what the first one should've been. While I was satisfied with the first one, this kinda takes on a more grander scale and does explore the social experiment and sociology part of this premise. At its core, it's still a dumb and fun thriller. However, this movie lacks any sense of security unlike the first, this does present a little bit of tension, since the movie is pretty much consists of watching are characters on the run. I feel like this was a huge improvement.

In the early going, this is basically everything I ever wanted out of Escape from New York - though it's probably closer to a John Carpenter take on The Warriors than anything. Kinda veers off the rails during the last half hour, and the ending is pretty unsatisfying, but it's fun enough ride for a while.

At least a bit more thought has been put into the concept here, particularly as we meet different groups of purgers with their own motivations. However, the movie's desperate attempts at some sort of political relevance are still betrayed by apparent lack of consideration of how this would all go down in real life. I feel like I enjoyed this more than the first film, but the premise isn't as fresh and on reflection it does seem more like a generic action film.

I love the overall concept behind both films, but while the 1st film squandered it, this film embraces it much more. The characters are nothing special, but I didn't hate them like in the previous film. It explored more of the ideas, politics & ramifications behind the purge, which I appreciated. A much more fun, thrilling & better film than the original. It's nothing extraordinary though. I enjoyed the 1st & 2nd acts, but by the 3rd, it seemed like the filmmakers didn't know how to end it.

If you've seen the other one there is no point in watching this one, it's so dull it's not worth watching unless you enjoy pure action and nothing but action. The plot is predictable, there are no surprises and you know exactly what you're going to get before you start watching. I would say this may actually be better than the original - but I'm giving it a lower score because it does not develop on anything interesting that could have been done with the premise / setting. Same film again.

Contrived sequel improves upon the original by considering the community-wide impact of such a scenario, but in such a broad, facile way that it is somewhat frustrating the more interesting aspects (especially from a governance point of view) are ignored in favour of familiar B-movie shenanigans. Logical loopholes aside, (and there are some doozies: volleys of off-screen gunfire saving the day, characters wilfully unprepared for surviving the evening), it's still a fun way to kill 90 minutes.

The conceit of the Purge gets back-doored here after about half an hour or so, and the movie becomes a (fairly skillful, undeniably fast-paced) 80's action throwback about a group of unlikely allies running through the city streets at night and dodging the gang of bad guys. I dug it--lean, unabashed R-rated action like this is hard to come by these days--but it honestly isn't anything you haven't seen before. For action fans only, is what I'm saying.

At least this sequel is an improvement on its predecessor. Grillo shines as the film's much needed hero (or anti-hero). And while the rest of the characters are occassionally annoying, they are a vast improvement on what came before. The only other problem is that the pacing is off and characters act in a manner that only serves as a plot device. Otherwise a decent film.

Top badass moment? This film making me mentally compile a list of the people I wouldn’t mind purging myself. I guess I’m a bad person, although to be fair it’s quite a short list. And there I was, thinking anarchy was something to sing about and a form of government by groups of hippies. I like this movie, it’s got a minigun in it. The UK just has JobCentres and Universal Credit to get rid of the poor; typical British understatement. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Frank Grillo's performance is the only bright spot in this shoddily-directed, unthrilling "horror" flick. I have not seen the first Purge, but the premise is too good to be wasted on something like this. The scares are cheap and unrealistic, the cinematography is mostly shaky-cam, and the dialogue is incredibly poorly-written. It does set up an interesting sequel, however, so I might be watching The Purge 3.

A tough guy looking for revenge helps some random people, and they eventually save him. It has a lot of ridiculousness but it was mostly worth watching. Music was too heavy handed. Directing was good, but the writing was atrocious and unconvincing. Carmen Ejogo, Zoe Soul and Kiele Sanchez were good, as was Frank Grillo.

Unlike its predecessor, THE PURGE: ANARCHY at least tentatively explores the urban chaos that such an event would occasion, along with the sociopolitical implications--but not to a degree that makes it especially compelling or memorable, choosing instead to focus on a group of refugees from the violence, who hide behind the gun of a man (Frank Grillo) on a personal vendetta. Technically and performatively competent, the script has a few rather gaping holes and the characters are fairly hollow.

I stayed safe during this Purge, but it still made me jump out of my skin. This film had a lot of jump-scares. Which are normally a pretty cheap way to scare you, but I didn't mind. I would say that this film was a little better than the first Purge because it was spread across an entire city, instead of limited to just one home. The violence was more stark and the people were more brutal. The main character seemed to be a rip-off of the Punisher...

I really like the imaginative plot of this franchise so it was great to see a sequel. This film doesnt disappoint and moves away from home invasion in the previous film and the world expands by showing you what happens on the streets during the purge. This film doesnt really suffer from the lack of a well known leading man. I think all of the performances are good with some of the dialogue being its main fault. The action scenes are nail biting but are held back by a 15 BBFC rating.

Michael Bay's lifelong ambition to create a filmic language able to explore the depth and sophistication of modern insurrectionary anarchism - the critique of market and democracy, capitalism and violence, the contradictions of a refusal of constraint in the allegedly universal freedoms of state-authorised rights - is here triumphantly realised as a relation of individual catharsis to demographic control, and the need for an excess to be supplied by state violence, a properly political theology.

Taking things outside is a welcome step forward in The Purge franchise, and the characters are a lot less hateable this time around. But this has also caused things to become more complex and at the same time, less believable. Do we need a revolutionary group in the series? Do we need government involvement? How about the fact that while things seemed relatively small in the first, we see homes being invaded in the second like it's nothing? What's to stop everyone from being killed?
