Too much story, no one CARES Purge people, we wanna see more "why did that old lady light that man on fire"
Just make a Robert Altmanesque big cast of players thing. ( 2014 Purge I'm hooting the same hollers) The idea of Purge Tourism is fun, can you imagine, a big tour bus of stereotypical Chinese tourists with cameras pulling into ... an old folks home following a Purge tour guide with flamethrowers!! Give me the keys to the sequel(s). This trash was made 30 years too late to be good.

I still think there's a thrilling movie to be made with this concept, but halfway through this one I was mentally checking out because Shit Just Happens For Silly Reasons. The concept of Purge tourists was kinda interesting, so of course nothing exciting is done with it. Please don't think I'm some kind of psycho, but this movie needed a bit more casual sadism to be truly unnerving. Now it's just a failed The Warriors with more cursing and less logic.

If you've continued with the series after the drastic changes of "Anarchy", you won't be surprised that the third installment is more or less just a continuation. There's a little more fleshing out of the world built in the previous installments, but at it's heart "Election Year" is just a poor man's action thriller with a gimmick. That's something I can dig. And Frank Grillo is starting to grow on me.

The second film seemed to have the right idea, so of course this one goes ass-backwards into the politics of it all instead of just giving us some killer anarchistic scenarios. Bleh. I won't miss this franchise.

Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It's got some really goofy Carpenter vibes. It's also refreshing to see a mainstream horror movie that features a mostly POC cast and explicitly calls out white privilege.

This film has one of the best trailers I have ever seen. Too bad about the actual film. Takes a great premise and makes a boring "people being chased by other people" film. On the periphery, you see other cool Purge scenes that last a few moments. Where did that guy get that huge guillotine? What about the non-murder Purging? Where's the person jaywalking without fear? Again, a cool world that the film refuses to examine in an interesting way.

About as good as the second if not a little better. I think you have to gobble these movies up like cotton candy to really enjoy them: forget that it's not real food and just enjoy the sugary goodness. And that's not a sleight against the franchise in the least. For the third time, the premise (and the swing on the formula) is interesting. Though I do think that they toned down the violence in this one. Maybe it was more about the message this go-round. This, like the others, is worth seeing.

This movie feels like it was trying to explore the more political and morally driven arch's of the purge. Unfortunately, I don't feel like it was well executed, instead feeling convoluted, inconsistent, and a tad in generic in its approach to what would be a interesting social experiment in the real world. Not to mention, it's predictable and lacks any tension the previous one presented. Grillo is still great, and it's still a dumb thriller movie in the end. Could've been more though.

Is this movie supposed to take place in 2034, or is it that the purge has been going on since the mid-90's? Also what a stupid idea for a purge movie. By the end of this movie I'd thought of five other purge movies that I'd have liked to see instead of this one. Starting with oh I dunno howsabout a purge movie that doesn't take place in the midst of urban squalor and involve snooty upper crust bad guys. Make a rural backwoods purge movie in the style of something like SOUTHERN COMFORT maybe.

You gotta think that the Purge Insurance rates have to be astronomical. I mean, much more than any deli shop owner can afford (even before they raised the rate) Think of all the destruction that could possibly happen on Purge Night across the US. It would cost a quadrillion dollars to put everything back together (only to have it all destroyed again the following year) I'm calling shenanigans on this whole Purge thing.

The trashiest, stupidest movie that will be released in 2016. There's some weirdly beautiful moments in here like the two black school girls dancing in the streets with their guns and the shot of the tree with all the bodies in it. Pleasantly surprised by the diversity in the cast as well.

Political satire in the same way professional wrestling or the Saw movies were political satire. Just another torture porn movie, just with a lot more pandering masked as morality. The best of the Purge movies, but that's like saying one of America's presidential hopefuls is the best of the available candidates.

For a film subtitled Election Year and coming out the same year as the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, this has almost nothing to say politically. This is true to the point where it goes out of its way to not say anything at all other than quarter-heartedly coming out against its own premise, which when played this straight is clearly reprehensible. This series previously existed on its premise alone, now it is just another franchise churning out sequels because they have name recognition.

This one is better than the second one both in terms of story and characters, however there are some major flaws in this, mainly the fact that all the set pieces are so isolated. there are too many time when people are standing around and nothing is happening. If the purge was happening in a city of any size there would be a lot more going on and not just random murder but full on riot like carnage, especially in places like Washington D.C.

Adopts the subversive urban action sensibilities of movies like Attack the Block with The Purge's overly simplistic political commentary. Its characters have the most potential in the franchise, but they spend the movie arguing over minutiae and finding reasons to leave safety. Once again, the franchise ignores its premise in favor of generic gunfights and horror imagery.

With each entry The Purge series has managed to understand how developping a story works. The series has been better with each sequel thanks to Frank Grillo and now Elizabeth Mitchell who provides the series with the first character who can make a real difference and is worth protecting for the greater good of the nation. The outdoor night scenes during the Purge continued to be disturbing as was expected. Another solid entry in the Purge series.

As with the two previous films, the concept of this is better than the actual result as a movie. It just seemed a lot like The Purge: Anarchy. Same old thing of people running around a city, encountering maniacs. There was an attempt to take it beyond the ground level, but it didn't end up being particularly interesting. The performances weren't great, but a lot of that was probably due to the majority of the dialogue being absolutely goddamn awful. Overall, extremely forgettable.

Frank Grillo is back as an autistic bodyguard, and now he's protecting the lefty Sarah Palin while shitting replacement ammo clips. Has more dystopian vibe than predecessors, as for the first time a lot of characters seem to see the purge as oppressive, rather than merely icky. What's it really like out on the streets during the purge? The series' answer remains: whatever suits the plot at the moment, and looks cool.

Undulates between a competent, almost well written film, and complete schlock trash. The first fifteen minutes set up a believable premise that could of gone on to be a more cerebral experience. Instead we are gifted with neo-nazi predators, crip cameos & (occasionally literally) phoned in dialogue to lazily give a character motivation. All things said, murder tourism is a great leave behind concept.

The IT GETS BETTER franchise. This creates his own mythology with a plot centered on an election featuring Trump and Hillary's models and their armies -- he's got neonazis and rich white people from the second film; she relies on a white hitman, a black ex-criminal, a Mexican worker, a MLK's-like revolutionary and a whole bunch of black dudes. The material neves tries to fully transcend this "reality" connections, but works on its own way as a curious politic-exploitation film.

No matter how you strain your movie metaphors or parse your cinematic symbolism, the fact is that The Purge: Election Year is a nasty, blunt bludgeon of a movie. This is a gruesome psychodrama about class and racial warfare that projects an almost cartoonishly slanted political message. (That's if a humorless vision of Nazi-like one-percenters butchering the downtrodden poor and then being butchered by them in turn can be considered cartoonish. Or political.(pluggedin.com)

* I remember liking the second one better. The potential is yet again wasted. I loved the random scenes of creative violence, wives killing husbands, traps set up for fun etc. But the side stories in this one were just way too much in the face and very badly acted and scripted, or maybe the script was so bad you couldn't act it well.. More purging but frustratingly less brains or intelligence; there's material here for a thoughtful, gruesome satire ala Romero, but DeMonaco continues to do so little with a terrific concept (and even skips over the interesting political subtext of left/right Clinton/Trump broadly hinted at by the title and tagline). Ultimately a tedious rehash of earlier chapters, which becomes numbing at the mid-point; Grillo as a cut-rate Statham is the only cast member who makes any impact.

The Purge: Election Year is a serviceable sequel but the franchise is treading water and the content hasn't progressed enough to surpass the enjoyment of Anarchy. The quality of this franchise is of a mediocre but watchable standard but in and amongst the poor writing, poor performances (excluding Frank Grillo) and the brainless action and violence are some entertaining and interesting ideas. And with a bit more scope and imagination there is lots I would like to see from future Purge sequels.

Loses steam compared to Anarchy as it becomes bogged down in the sledgehammer subtext, sacrificing some of the "sandbox" nature. That was after all the cinematic version of the Pedestrian Riot cheat in the GTA series, whereas Election Year opts for tongue-speaking evangelical Purgers and Russian murder tourists dressed up in Lady Liberty/Abe Lincoln getups. A more paranoid, but less fluidly entertaining film, nevertheless something to watch in the runup to November 8th 2016.

Since the Purge became Escape from New York meets The Warriors with the second one, it's been fun. Same things I liked about Anarchy applies here: ridiculousness, a message (no matter how heavy handed, who cares?), talking points, awesome masks, awesome violence, and an eeriness as you watch the disturbing nature of humans; though if you're watching these as horror movies you're doing it wrong. Not as good as the second but still wonderful trashy entertainment.

The Purge: Election Year has a message, and it delivers it with the efficiency and subtlety of a jackhammer. Its message puts its audience in an awkward position - do we root for the people trying to take away our fun? - but it's the thought that counts. These movies have been mostly mediocre anyway, so it's not too hard to cheer for those in the moral right. There aren't many scares, the action isn't very good, and the act has started to wear thin.
