The I'm-going-to-swing-this-blade-down-just-slow-enough-so-that-BANG-BANG-BANG-oh-I'm-dead-now movie. If you're looking for a thrilling ride through a dystopian future where violence is king and Ethan Hawke's hair bleach is queen, then get yourself a physics degree, create a nuclear warhead, drop it on Australia, and hotwire a barb-wired dune buggy, because a movie was about a stupid teenager who fucks over her family because reasons. Ethan Hawke's hair bleach still queen, though.

Concept's kinda interesting, and is shoved aside 5 minutes in for plain old home invasion thrillerstuff without thrills. The amount of scenes where a character is holding a weapon and is ready to strike only to be shot by someone offscreen is ridiculous.

Interesting idea but I just hate this movie so much. Even if we ignores some obvious issues with the concept of the Purge, the generic plot here is the worst way to go about it. Predictable jump scares. Terrible defensive strategy. Stupid family. I hate Charlie so much. Overreliance on last second gun rescues. FWIW the sequels are slightly better, though this one has the best cast (except Charlie). Fav scene: Ethan Hawke in pool room.

While the whole premise behind the Purge was relatively intriguing, it only serves as a backdrop for what turns into a generic, lackluster home invasion thriller flick. Any type of commentary or insight into society is handled poorly and downplayed by some goofy, empty characters. Bleh. At least Hawke's performance was alright.

In what could have been a monumentally entertaining look at a widespread sociological phenomenon, instead we get the impact on a single family. This completely makes it no different from any other home invasion type film. The opening and closing credits were far more chilling than anything that occurred in the film. Normally I would rate this higher since everyone does a good job, but fuck that, this was an epic fail and completely unrealized potential.

The Purge is a poorly formulated home invasion movie whose sole attribute that separates it from the rest of the pack is a half-baked concept. I didn't care about the characters and I don't like home invasion movies so that leaves this concept. It failed to address how the government can 1. Enforce this one night only idea, 2. How the country could come to accept it. 3. How people could possibly not hold a grudge that they would act upon for the remaining year.

From the looks of it they gave the bad guys Halloween masks simply so they could market this as a horror film. It's a pretty tired horror trope, and it makes absolutely no sense in this context. Everybody is immune, so why hide their identity? It's stupid. Ugh. Anyways, I got excited for a minute when I thought that they were going to do this whole movie without any jump scares, but then there was a whole fuck-tonne of jump scares. These home invasion movies are just exploitative crap.

ethan hawke dons his legendary frown and hopelessly scrabbles to defend a duhmatorium of a screenplay from james demonaco. deja vu? might've been more tolerable if it wasn't so desperately pretending to be more than a crappy little home invasion flick -- i've seen goosebumps episodes that were more nuanced and coherent allegories.

The problem is that The Purge is about as subtle as any Roger Corman satire on American violence worship, but filmed like any of a dozen other home invasion movies. If you're going to go this route, at least make it fun, give us this world that you're only hinting at, and then make us choke on it. Stop boring us with lectures.

It has a pretty cool and intriguing concept which is wasted in the execution. A big problem for me was the characters. Not only were they not interesting, they were downright annoying. I especially hated the son - he just made stupid decision after stupid decision. These sort of home invasion films have been done several times now, and it's a shame they couldn't come up with anything more interesting. It's just a waste of a good idea.

A waste of a terrific dystopian/sci-fi premise goes the least interesting route; ignoring the probing of a society that would result in a scenario like this, instead localising it as the tale of a rather dull wealthy family having their house broken into. It doesn't help that we learn nothing about the family, or even where they really stand on the "Purge" issue. Still watchable thanks to a fine cast, but the repetitive 'gunshot-from-offscreen' deus ex machina becomes tiresome after a while.

This had lots of potential to show us a global experiment about our society. This premise is filled with potential, but the movie takes a very isolated approach and it turns out to be a house invasion film. I do enjoy what we got, and I feel like while it plays into tropes and clichés, I kinda look past them. It's a solid film, but undoubtedly I feel like they didn't realize the potential in this idea until later down the road, but it's a decent stepping stone movie.

Sometimes when I leave my house, I find myself sitting in the car wondering whether I locked the front door. It's something I do all the time, but it's such a mundane and forgettable activity. By the time I reach my car, I cannot remember whether or not I have done it. Sometimes, I even go back and check just to be sure. So I started a mental checklist every time I leave. Once I'm absolutely certain the door is locked, I try to remember whether or not I had watched "The Purge".

Well, where do you start with this one? The stupid premise? The criticism of a society that doesn't exist? The make-every-dumb-decision-possible main characters you're actively rooting against? The Tardis-like house? The second-rate Manson family baddies? The fact the whole thing somehow manages to be both utterly nonsensical yet agonisingly predictable at the same time? Astonishingly bad.

This could have gone in several directions and been successful. Unfortunately, it's never very scary, and the dystopia they set up (and the social issues they blatantly try to work in) are never very interesting. The darkness was supposed to be atmospheric, but it really just results in shitty cinematography. The "shocking" twists are telegraphed miles away too. Definitely not a highlight of either the dystopia genre or the home invasion genre.

Just skip this, watch the sequels, and come back to it later if you want. This movie has a ton of problems, but none are more pervasive than the fact that so much potential for a fun satirical horror movie was wasted on a garden-variety home invasion movie. The sequels honestly do fix most of the problems, though, and are worth watching for anyone who considers themselves a horror enthusiast (particularly "Anarchy").

Whilst the Purge raises an interesting moral question (raised but not addressed in the film) of "do I risk everything for this guy, or know that nothing will ever be the same again" this piece of garbage doesnt even have the smarts to discuss that KEY dilemma. Hideously predictable, boring nonsense that over-uses the "just in the nick of time" idea by about x4. I cant tell you how hideously predictable this rubbish is. This is the kind of premise that wouldn't work even if this had been directed by Kubrick. Really. From the very beginning, it becomes clear that this invasion film will end just like it started -- rich white family saved the poor black dude, so the black dude will save the rich white family back. The Purge clearly wants to be some sort of Clockwork Orange of our times -- filled with a Funny Games-like domestic tension --, but its subversive kill-the-poor subversive agenda falls short.

Top badass moment? A documentary made during President Trump’s second term in office, I really wanted to hate Ethan Hawke, (who looks like a big-eared version of Kevin Bacon), living in his huge, gated-community home; but somehow, he was just a bit too decent. How disappointing. However, I was pleased to see the neighbour sharpening his machete was wearing good PPE, shame the actual blade looked a mess; there was light reflecting at all angles off it. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

LOTS and LOTS of wasted potential in this movie. Even ignoring how much they could have done with this premise, it's a sub-par horror thriller. It relies too often on jump scares, there's about a million painfully predictable moments of bad guys getting shot right at the last possible second, people make lots of stupid decisions, and the "psycho" characters really ham it up too much. The "leader" especially tried too hard to seem like some Joker-esque killer, and never like a real person.

I love the premise but really bad execution, a story that you expect, and some god awful acting drag it down to a really forgettable mess. This should've been incredibly dark, something that people would talk about and be scared of, but instead they tried to turn it into some preachy thing about the class system. Pretty embarrassing. Concept, concept... failed execution. It does pose a few good questions about human nature, but it abandons the social commentary for easy scares and violent shoot-outs. Home invasion movies will still remain a bit creepy so long as you're watching them in your house, but that's not a past-time I regularly indulge in. The Hunger Games is a much better imagination of this type of dystopian world where violence is a government mandate and it's far more believable. Avoid.

People say it's an interesting idea; it is for movie making but has so many holes in real life. This has potential but it just becomes nothing and very little is redeeming about it. I already found the concept idiotic BEFORE I watched the film and realized it served as an outlet for DeMonaco's delusion that we can make a Utopia by allowing the rich the catharsis of killing the poor. That this conceit does next to nothing to bring the film out of the doldrums of garden-variety "panic room" horror doesn't help. A subplot involving Adelaide Kane fizzles out with similar irrelevance. DeMonaco ultimately falls headlong into the trap of not challenging his worldview... and boredom.

Well, the concept is so unstable that it is difficult to come up with something tenable in it; the whole thing falls apart in one word...Arson. Also what kind of crazy (read stupid) person goes out with an ax while others are out with rifles? The main villain-ling tries his best to be Joker-like but fails miserably. It's a bit better than I remember, but still doesn't teach the height of the later Purges. Best premise for a survival thriller to come along in quite a while. Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady do a good job, but the rest of the cast is pretty forgettable. Could have used more character development, and more perspectives during the exposition. For example, we saw how rich people prepare for the purge, but what about the middle class, what do they do if they don't intend to participate? However the story could be better, though there was a sweet twist, most of the characters are weak and there's much else to be done. But not a bad film, it is enjoyable.

God I wish they would switch the lights back on. This is all I thought during this. Forced and could have been done hell of a lot better.

Quite possibly the dumbest fucking premise for a movie ever conceived.

An interesting premise squandered after the movie soon devolves into a standard slasher flick.

Pretty obvious metaphor in play here. The premise is interesting but rediculous as this would have lasted one year and there wouldn't be many people left afterwards. Still, entertaining enough

The weakest of the series, but the concept is enough to pull it through

Horrendous execution of a legitimately interesting premise.

Concept is entertaining, and should have made for a good movie. But it's a non-scary home invasion movie, that is just attempting to say "killing is bad, mmk?"

I'm in love with the premise, and the film does wring a few bits of catharsis out of its themes of societal clash and moral integrity. But I'm much more struck by the amount of waste here, the stock action beats that don't give us any insight into the underdeveloped characters, and the pacing which manages to feel off in spite of the film's tight runtime.
