I cried twice, so am honour-bound to mark it up. But it's pretty thin and uncomplicated. The rationale given for her lack of organizational/institutional attention/support is fairly absurd; there's no way such an unparalleled talent with a shot at destroying the Soviets during the Cold War would get kicked to the curb. The potential complexities of a female Fischer-era prodigy are mostly neglected in favour of often facile grrrl-power-broking. Some odd jiveyness to Jolene, last line especially

The final episode is so devoid of any friction or intense character moments, every obstacle so easily done away with and every resolution so rushed, whitewashed and detached from the ordeals leading up to it, it practically screams "wrap it all up, they're pulling the plug!". And then poochie DID NOT return to his home planet.

finds a middle ground between Young Adult Novel Adaptation and Showtime Prestige Drama that, I think, really works. the subject matter is handled honestly without being indulgent and dramatically satisfying without being (or at least feeling) contrived. that said, there are some great opportunities left on the table, particularly regarding the sexual power dynamics. in chess terms, it makes a lot of Best Moves and minimal Blunders, but no true Brilliancies.

Episodes 1,2, and the finale are great and totally cinematic. The narrative gets a bit aimless in the middle episodes, exploring a substance abuse story with far too little darkness. Still a worthwhile quarantine binge with some emotionally charged moments and beautiful retro scenery. I feel like people say this about everything these days but it really might've worked better as a standalone film.

Score based on the first four episodes. Standardised in every perspective: presentation of the feminist theme, colour, and filming. Made for giving people a chance to sit back, get stimulated a bit in their numbness and chat about the costume and hairstyle of the characters: in this sense, a superhero movie of an "intellectual" and fashion-show type.

Oddly compelling series, despite having the same event take place over and over and over again. I didn't want to get sucked into this for 7 straight hours, but I was and it was mostly an enjoyable experience. The storytelling craft is really what sets this apart from everything else. My only qualm is with the "Magical Negro" character, Jolene, one of the most forced, cringe-worthy, poorly developed characters I've seen in a long while.

I used to love chess growing up and even collected chess sets. I will say though, chess wasn't the initial reason I became interested. Anya Taylor-Joy has really come into herself in the past 5 years or so with big roles such as "Thoroughbreds" and "Split", but this is definitely her best performance to date. She is perfect in every sense of the word, and plays the hell out of Beth Harmon. I can't imagine anyone else in the role. I hope to see more from her in future!

Very impressive filmmaking in several ways. The look of everything was fantastic and they perfectly conveyed the tension (or lack thereof) in the various matches with filmmaking rather than the board itself. The story follows a pretty familiar path so there is little that is groundbreaking, but it really just does everything well and engages throughout.

THIS is how you do a female empowerment story. By NOT shitting on every singe male-assumed character and making them paper thin cartoon villains (looking at you Captain Marvel and Charlie's Angels). Anya has a huge aura beyond her physical frame.

Yep, this one really is worthy of my score of 90. Seems we always have to slog through far too many rivers of crap to find the rare, glistening gem that is "The Queen's Gambit." With the look and feel of a feature film, this limited Netflix series features superb acting from many in the cast, and I can't say enough about the amazing job Taylor-Joy does. Her performance was just stunningly good.

The frame is quite basic, the story of the orphan prodigy has been told often and the series follows most of it, even while avoiding some of the more drastic tropes. Nonetheless, it has a solid structure and is enjoyable to take in. Wardrobe, scene set-up and the general cinematography are well crafted and it is quite an achievement to film captivating chess matches over seven episodes. Let's hopes Netflix focuses more on limited runs instead of cancelling its shows half-way.

Magnificent acting from Joy on all fronts. Emmy worthy. .. Story is very original though seemingly predictable. The sets, costumes, script, even the CGI. The supporting actors, the Mum, the Janitor, the Orphans friend, even the old guy right at the end playing chess with her.. all excellent.. must be a brilluant director .. ooh and the CGI.. masterful The main premise is totally implausible but you sort of wish it could be true .. like a Superhero movie..

Somewhat tropey and melodramatic, some forced quirkiness, some obvious turns, some unrealistic ones. There were strong scenes like the one with Mr. Ganz and Mr. Shaibel, the first episode's ending, the speed chess scenes with Harmon and Watts, the return to the Methuen Home. The scenery is wonderful, the soundtrack is very cool. Some unexpected acting slumps from the leads. Jolene's character is unfortunately very cliched. On the whole, overrated.

It's probably much better if you don't know about the pro chess scene, but let's be honest, it would be extremely boring if it was more realistic. As a "coming of age road movie" it's pretty good, the ride is hard but wholesome, the characters are mostly all good and likable, the actors fit their roles, and the cinematography is sublime at times.

scott frank comes with another lavish period piece in a time obsessed with "based on a true story" marketing phrase. it starts by playing down the usual story beats one could expect in the spaces such a story takes place and slowly transforms into a more familiar form later on - but ends on a commendable note which we're simply not used to even in contemporary cold war dramas. beautifully shot, cosy miniseries featuring subtle performances.

Basically the formulaic underdog sports story with the twist of it being about a woman chess player, but it does the formula pretty well. Great Production Design. Jolene's "Magic Black Woman" character makes this feel like a movie from the 80s and in a bad way.

A wonderful mini-series on Netflix. The show was perfect length wise although the middle of the show it meanders a little bit. It's a well acted, well directed, well written mini series that is engaging from start to finish. The Show focuses on Beth Harmon a chess savant with a tragic past and upbringing. It managed to avoid a lot of the tropes you'd see in a tragic orphan story which keeps it fresh for a story told hundreds of times.

gee she's a looker. i don't think it was cliched at all, other than the usual soviet accents, which were in fact fine. very well shot. the plot was straightforward as dick, yeah, but everything else is way better. did i say she is damn hot?

The pacing can be hit or miss due to the nearly constant time jumping and the repetition of scenes. It could’ve maybe been a bit shorter even. While it does drag a bit because of this, it still has some great moments sprinkled throughout. Anya Taylor-Joy is excellent here, and a lot of the key plot points work very well. Probably not one that I’ll see again, but it’s worth seeing through once.

For a mini-series whose foundation is the same thing we've seen eight hundred times over, this is exceptional. I'm not a fan of the dreary orphan whose ceaseless trauma can be prescribed by their cold and sterile upbringing, so it's a testament to the artistry of The Queen's Gambit that I found myself utterly transfixed to this. It's so well done, in fact, that I was starting to question whether it might be based on a composite of real life.

OUAT my parents dropped me at an under 9s county chess tournament with zero expectations and returned to find me with the trophy and a 100% record, getting courted by team coaches. i was no beth but i can't pretend to any objectivity here; it's exhilarating to find a caring, mostly accurate portrayal of chess in a mainstream fiction after decades of botched representation, and all those flickers of recognition and excitement were enough to sustain me through the dramatic fumbles.

Who knew chess could be so exciting? I knew nothing about this show, and it pleasantly surprised me by being funny, sad, dramatic, witty, emotional and just beautiful. I loved the 60's vibe; the fashion, the haircuts, the set design, the music. The cinematography and acting is phenomenal.

Quite overrated overall. But the last episode was sublime and convinced me that it was an above average Netflix show. I wish we saw more of Isla Johnston and Moses Ingram though, they were both really solid and interesting characters. Anya did manage to pull a rather satisfying performance around the mid-series. She was much more confortable playing an alcoholic young adult than a troubled teenager. 60's wardrobe and decor was on point.

About a week after finishing this I was considering Elizabeth's fashion journey and her obvious final outfit, when the the whole chess-game/successful-woman metaphorical storyline suddenly hit me like the last scene of a dodgy Shyamalan movie. Wow, it's good! If possible, I'd recommend absorbing it the same way: Enjoy the experience and then go over the game afterwards. (I can't play chess btw!)

On the cover the story is about chess, but actually it's about a little girl who grows up in an environment completely lacking love and the effects this has on her adult life. For most of the show, I thought she is a psychopath, because she didn't show any emotions, but when she cracked, I have realized that she was just silently screaming inside all the time. A brutal story. I would have liked a few more scenes in the end addressing her mental health, but I still recommend it to everyone.

Pleasant. A slight improvement from most average Netflix originals. Beautiful set design and intricate camera work. Underwhelming first one or two episodes. Great editing. The mini-series starts out like a re-skin of the "Legend of 1900", but quickly ramps into much more compelling acting, writing, and ironically, music. One of the few series that truly nails the ending. Here's to hoping Netflix doesn't get greedy by trying to make a sequel.

A mostly delightful reimagining of history supposing a female chess master. I am old enough to know the events never occurred, but that did not take away from the fun of watching this rather well-made bit of fiction. Anya Tayor-Joy was pretty and a bit odd but entirely likable in this. I wish I had actually learned something new about chess though. Haha. It was fun and worthwhile.

Anya Taylor-Joy is fantastic,technically it's flawless,the chess scenes are actually very intense and engaging and it has every hard emotional core with its main characters.Having seen it after all the hype though I did find some logical problems ,some odd choices to show or not show certain events and quite few familiar beats.Overall though I would recommend it to anyone chess lover or not.If you don't care about chess it's gonna make you like it trust me.
