Drastically modified ending from the novel is a major debit. Surprising too, since the movie had been so faithful up till then, taking whole passages from Greene in both narration and dialogue. The change renders the title pointless, since now it is the narrator who becomes the subject. Looks like, even though they had to change it, they tried to keep it Real Deep, so they dumped a load of guano on the Fowler character, figuring as long as they ragged on somebody it would still sound like Art.
