Mostly forgettable political drama/romance. I find it really hard to get into any movie with Brendan Fraser in it. Not bad, but certainly not great, either. The best things were Caine's performance and Christopher Doyle's cinematography.

This is a movie about every kind of betrayal. It is less an attempt to present a quasi-documentary of events culminating in the full-scale American involvement in Vietnam than it is a symbolic (or poetic-symbolic) attempt to portray more obscure aspects of the relations between forces or peoples that resulted in that tragedy which is called “Vietnam”. A little clunky and staid, but, nevertheless, the filmmakers do strive to draw from the strength of the material, with mixed results.

I tried to be engaged in the story, but failed to get the emotional impact they intended. So much was pleasing and yet I remain unfulfilled by the result. The story meanders along providing misdirections and mystery but the intrigue is killed at the beginning when they show the ending. I get the impression much of the story just never made it onto the screen. I have mixed feelings about the film. It was however a delight to see the beautiful and graceful Do Thi Hai Yen in this movie.

Pretty perfunctory. Some nice cinematography moments though. They don't seem to be able to film this one without overcoming the temptation to change the ending, do they?

It's a good story with a very capable cast but this movie never really felt real. The setting didn't come to life. All in all it felt a bit wasted.

Decent only really for excellent performances from Caine and Do Thi Hai Yen other than which it's a reasonable story of limited inspiration.

Slow, but not completely unengaging.

Not bad, it was engaging enough, and Michael Caine was alright. But I just felt like not a lot happened... or it wasn't delivered with much punch. There simply wasn't much intrigue, and as it drew to its conclusion, I found myself wondering if that was really all.

Engaging drama that whilst things are spelled out a little too clearly in places has that kind of dense narrative a good book adaptation should.

I feel sorry for Brendan Fraser. With his face it's very difficult to take him as a serious character. But it still is quite an enjoyable movie.

Disappointing - I didn't believe in the relationship between Fraser and Caine and couldn't really engage with the story.

What looks like a war/political thriller is actually more like a backdrop for a very good character study

Far from being bad but far from being memorable as well. Semi-compelling and semi-interesting, the film has its share of solid scenes, a strong performance from Caine and it's generally well-crafted (with some great kinetic shots) but it's mildly underwhelming as a whole.

A great performance by Michael Caine, ably supported by Brendan Fraser, but the film takes itself a bit too seriously. A visually lush film with some great set pieces and a commendably mature look at realpolitik.

This movie preserves Greene's irony. showing how naive American attempts to make a better world bring great evil in their wake. Caine is fine, Fraser is surprisingly subtle, and the message is even more powerful since the recent American invasion of Iraq.

As subtle as the film may be, it is anything but quiet, because beneath the surface of the narrative, Greene's ultimate message speaks volumes.

Director Philip Noyce is magician. I really liked Rabbit-Proof Fence and The Saint. The Quiet American is better than any of his films so far. Its absolutely stunning in every aspect. Movie is also a history lesson and in my mind one the best releases in 2002.

All-timer performance from Caine. Fraser, also, perfectly cast because he's got that deer-in-headlights newbie thing down pat but he's got the chops to turn that on its head and deliver a performance that'll sneak up on you. This does an interesting job of trying to juggle a love triangle with a dangerous political backdrop that's got more intrigue than it first lets on, and overall the film shifts its focus whenever it needs to. It doesn't quite land the emotional impact, but it's forgivable.

It's a pretty film, shot by Christopher Doyle, and an appealingly languid pace and a very good central performance. It's also fundamentally unsatisfying.
