Intriguing premise and great general story but it gets bogged down by mediocre special effects, acting never reaching beyond "decent" and a general low budget feel of the film. See it for the idea, not for the spectacle.

I'm not sure how this isn't the inspiration for Z for Zachariah. Just replace Doesn't Have a Rape Scene with Has a Rape Scene and they're pretty much the same. You could replace Has Full Frontal Male Nudity with Doesn't Have Full Frontal Nudity and you'd be fine. Reminiscent of The Omega Man. If you replace Mutant Creatures with A Black Guy than you're racist.

An interesting twist on the classic post-apocalypse movie theme. Much better than modern garbage like The Road, but suffers from being an old movie that did not age too well. Also the psychodrama becomes absolutely terrible once the third character is introduced, and the ending is weird. Overall, would recommend watching if you have time to waste.

The "last man on Earth" scenario is an intriguing premise, but difficult to pull off. Quiet Earth does not succeed very well. It's best not to even think about the fuzzy science involved, the acting is merely adequate, there's a completely unnecessary chase scene, and on the whole it just doesn't do anything that interesting with the concept. Not that it's a bad movie, though... it's perfectly watchable, and has a pretty cool ending.

An enjoyable post-apocalypse yarn with a likeable performance from Lawrence and an interesting premise that thankfully avoids being too predictable. It feels like it loses its way a bit in the final third, but the redeems itself somewhat with the ending. Murphy does a decent job on what was probably a very low budget. Quietly and quirkily impressive.

It has that great Sci-Fi attribute: you'll fall asleep fantasizing about it. A world in which you're the only one alive. There are a lot of fun things you can do, but how long before you start to feel the sickening need for companionship? Is a world for yourself a life worth having? This movie does a good job. It captures the alienation and the various stages of going through a.. 'remarkable' experience like this quite well. The ending shot is mesmerizing, in all it's epic lowbudgetness.

Pretty cool sci-fi flick. It's missing that extra something but the atmosphere of isolation is top notch.

The first 30 mins or so is quite excellent. The rest is ok but suffers from unconvincing pseudo-science, trite religious connections and uninteresting relationships. Also, very good visually, which highlights that it's not necessary to go overboard with effects.

The first half-hour with Lawrence staggering through the world alone is the real standout here. Pleasure, madness, and despair mark his days. Though he begins to find his own way in the lonely world, relationships with survivors dredge up past guilt, posing questions going forward that will determine the course of all their lives. The weakness of the other actors, as well as the paper-thin science in the plot drop this a couple of notches, but it remains a pretty watchable film.

A great sci-fi from New Zealand filmmakers,The Quiet Earth ask the question: what would you do if you woke up and were the last person on earth? The film uses this question as the main driving force behind the film. Really worth checking out if you're into science fiction at all.

Shifts between being a casual C-grade end-of-the-world scenario and a proper portrayal of intense loneliness. Thankfully, it favours the latter and ends up being a pretty exciting lo-fi sci-fi film without going overboard in any way.

This story of the last man (almost) on earth is effective especially in the first half of the film, but gets bit boring once the triangle love story appears. The end of the film is worth seeing again..

This is quite a good film - its an indie/b movie type film but its quite engrossing and I features good performances. The plot intrigued me (it starts quite quickly as a sort of descent into madness, initially) and I thought it somewhat reminded me of the Danny Boyle '28' films, i.e. 28 Days Later etc., only without the Zombies. There are some near jumpscare/thrilling moments, if briefly. The music is a bit cheesy and its fairly dated but I wasn't overly bothered by that. I'd recommend it, yes.

Fascinating science fiction that gives the audience plenty to think about. I think all these 'last man alive' movies fall in to the same trap of having to do something with the second and third acts - see 28 Days Later or The Last Man on Earth for particular examples of a good first act rapidly dropping off. The Quiet Earth handles it better than most however, and manages to remain engaging in spite of some ropey acting by Lawrence's colleagues.

i downloaded this thinking i havent seen it, only to realize, this is a movie i saw when i was little............... i fucking love when that happens. anyway, i havent seen this movie in almost 20 years, and it is pretty great, i think. a wonderful "last man on earth" type flick, which is one of my favorite narratives. never gets old for me. takes it a bit further though when 2 others show up, and theres a bit of that "2 men, 1 attractive woman" tension, that is done pretty well.

My distant recollection is that a couple of fine visual moments and a good ending are the best things going for it, and that it is unfortunate that every single poster and bit of marketing spoils the surprise.

Creates a very convincing realistic deserted world without the post-apocalypse disaster cliché's. The first half with him just wandering around is therefor the most interesting and best part of the movie. In the second half the movie becomes more conventional plot driven, but also still above average. The movie tops it of with an superb ambiguous ending.

A great premise that didn't go over as great as I wanted it to. I think the best parts were before any other characters were introduced and it was just one man having the entire world to himself. And the last scene was awesome but just confused me more than I've ever been confused before. A true WTF moment.

"The Quiet Earth" starts out great when Bruno are 'alone' in whatever world it is. It's also okay when he meets the girl (except for at few signs of weakness). But when the third person is introduced, it starts. Script, dialogue and acting escalates and gets so bad and corny towards the end, that you don't know if you should laugh or cry. Also impressive to cast 2 out of 3 characters so terrible. Will never understand how it got a 6.9 score at IMDB. Don't say it is because its cult. Just don't

Nice when it is just Bruno Lawrence. Then: Three survivors of an odd apocalypse make up an (at one early moment, in case you're an idiot, literal) love triangle, with uninteresting racial themes present. Love those clouds in the nice closing moments.

It was advertised to me as a movie where a man is completely isolated on Earth. This was true in the beginning, and the solitude of the protagonist was very emotional. The style of the movie however later changed dramatically and instead of the emotions of being alone on the planet, science fiction started to take reign and I felt that it was really unnecesary. I am not sure I'd want to watch again the second part of the movie, however the first hour was really good.

The question of what happened (never very well answered) certainly piques our curiosity; and our voyage of mutual discovery in the company of the hero is interesting for a time, at least until a swivel chair eventually heaves a body into view (charred flesh, bulging eyes -- eek!). Even more interesting is the brief period when the hero is getting used to the idea of aloneness and making the best of it

Really interesting, thoughtful scifi film with the fairly familiar last man on Earth premise. It is never boring. I'm not quite sure if it's great, but it's close. I'll probably watch it again at some point. Would pair interestingly with The World, the Flesh, and the Devil.

Pretty well pulled-off mostly due to Bruno Lawrence, whose period of solitude is the highlight. When the supporting cast is introduced, the picture lags a little, mostly due to the acting, which goes from mediocre to horrible. To call this another end of the world flick isn't really giving it much credit. The plot details are left pretty vague (I'm still not quite sure if the world ended or just these folks') and the end is totally confused. Still, entertaining and watchable.
