Conventional but well made courtroom drama finds Coppola in assignment mode and doing a reasonably good job of it, although it is clear he has no real emotional investment in the material. Unlike Sorkin, he has some idea how to make a story of this kind relatively cinematic, within obvious limits, and the performances are well judged. The 'romantic' subplot is not skillfully integrated into the main plot though, and Grisham's intellectual limitations are on full display.

Oh man this was a bust. I read the book first but I don't think the whole "book being better then the movie" theory really tells the whole story here. It just seemed to be really low budget and unimaginative. Normally I like Damon, but this might have been his worst performance in any movie I have seen him in (except for maybe Team America). The whole plot line is drab and blah blah blah. The courtroom scenes which I love in the book were an utter disappointment. Stick to the book!

Remember when John Grisham novels and their movie adaptations were the big thing? Court stuff. Great cast here, but all of the exclamation points were removed and the lines all sound flat. Watch the preview. "Do you even remember when you first sold out?" OH SNAP! That's the big line of the movie and it's delivered with all the flair of a dentist's waiting room.

Decent court room drama with Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, John Voight, and Roy Scheider. Damon and Devito take on a corrupt insurance company and attempt to out manuever their slick high priced attorney (Voight).

I bet the costume department was happy when they figured out that Mickey Rourke already owned his costume. The Rainmaker is typical of most Gresham adaptations in that is a perfectly serviceable Sunday afternoon movie. Everyone is entertaining enough and there is enough inspirational monologues to make your parents smile.

Fun courtroom drama and procedural. Typical legal movie tropes and inaccuracies. Good villainous Jon Voight. Matt Damon is great for the part of the idealistic young lawyer. Danes' story was unnecessary. DeVito not too overbearing. Fav scene: getting blindsided with the witness who apparently slept with all of senior management.

Damon and DeVito are great. The direction by Coppola is great. The script however starts off a little slow but turns around one the audience gets into the main thrust of the film. Nothing special in terms of plot or dialouge but an excellently made film none the less.

An inoffensive but generic and predictable underdog story in the style of a legal drama. The romance subplot can feel a bit forced at times, but besides that it's definitely at least watchable.

Viewed March 31, 2021. A superlative courtroom drama. Coppola elevates the John Grisham book into a really affecting study of the way regular people get swallowed up by systems. Plenty of nice classical touches.

This movie might have caught me on a good day but I actually enjoyed it. Damon is charming as the everyman lawyer and Danes is believable as someone who was punched. A good supporting cast helps this along.

it's decent enough, but nothing mind blowing here. it'd be a quite by the numbers courtroom drama if it weren't for the outstanding cast. voight and devito carried much of the movie. damon does all right, considering the fact this is one of his first leading roles. a subtle, low-brow 90s hollywood affair.

Coppola's courtroom-drama is stocked-full of talented cast members: Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, Jon Voight, Roy Scheider, Virginia Madsen, Mickey Rourke, Claire Danes. It's based on a John Grisham novel. How does such a recipe for success turn so mediocre? The court proceedings are not that involving, never become tense enough, and Damon's character doesn't seem to know the first thing about entering a courtroom. Despite solid acting, it never quite hits the right dramatic note.

An attack on the deficiencies of the American health system that uses the device of a battle between good and evil lawyers to expose the endemic corruption of the medical insurance industry. It does not quite manage to suggest, however, that this corruption is systemic, and hence that an overhaul of the health system is necessary, let alone advance the proposition that advanced industrial societies have an obligation to guarantee adequate health care to all their members, regardless of wealth.

Interesting, but mostly flat. Nothing here is especially gripping, and courtroom drama movies really need to keep you hooked to make it work. It was already pushing it with the ending (you'll see what I mean), so I can't say anything about this was particularly gratifying.

I enjoyed this movie thoroughly. The script is smart, and all of the actors are competent enough to keep it on its feet (I love Danny DeVito). It's an interesting character study, and there's less concern with process rather than with character relationships, at least up until the trial sequences, which are engaging enough. I think the love subplot could've been scrapped, though.

Although not a bad film, the script is slightly weak for such a director. Especially the Danes storyline was so pointless that I was shocked at its conclusion. The character couldve been developed in a much better way. Other than that, the main plot was decent enough to drag you along and the court room scenes were enjoyable.

A kitschy, pandering, simple little piece of feel-good plastic like all the other John Grisham adaptations. It's indistinct enough that you couldn't tell that a renowned auteur directed this just by watching it. It's perfectly watchable, though, and the cast does boast many lovely names.

A young Memphis lawyer (Matt Damon) makes his bones on a case which pits him against an insurance agency (their counsel: Jon Voight) who denied the claim of a dying young man. Smoothly handled John Grisham entertainment, showing the Coppola touch in some of the more colorful characters (Mickey Rourke and Dean Stockwell, especially). It's not especially resonant, and some of the more interesting characters are overlooked in favor of extraneous subplots, but it's one of Coppola's best late films.

A quality, likeable, and engaging courtroom drama is hard to find for me. Damon's character did a good job humanizing the lawyer profession, and the proceedings still hit modern hot button topics. Yet the Danes subplot was not fleshed out enough, the rewatchability factor is lacking, and the whole thing ultimately lacked subtlety.

This is a decent movie that is hampered by the fact that the book it is based on is not one of Grisham's best novels. What problems I have wih movie are story related, not acing. Damon and DeVito work well together and bothe Voight and Scheider are sufficently slimy. A great anti-insurance company movie, I suppose. The payoff at the end is still way too high to be believable.

Coppola made a strong, warm-blooded comeback when he turned one of the hot Grisham properties of the '90s into an engaging, character-driven David-vs.-Goliath legal drama exploring the scuzzier domains of the insurance game. Damon is crisp and solemn here in ways that make him a choice contrast to the rich plot's more ebullient figures, like DeVito's lovable paralegal, as well as a roster of major actors peppered in for good measure in distinctive, well-drawn supporting and bit roles.
