Delightful comedy with Harrison in one of his best early performances, in a screenplay which runs the gamut of world issues in and about the second World War. Perhaps the screenplay is a little too episodic (and filled with too much incident) for its own good, but much of the dialogue is hilarious, and director Gilliat shows an unexpected directorial prowess in some well staged scenes and situations.

Rex Harrison was almost too charming in The Rake's Progress (1945). A little on the long side, but for the most part the film carries itself well. Almost as well as Rex himself.
