Absurd, ironic, and absolutely ballsy. How they left North Korea with the footage they shot is practically a heist, but I find it to actually be a comment on how North Korea just doesn't perceive irony. Jacob makes the movie, with his insightful commentary that remains under the radar due to the North Koreans believing him to be nothing more than a simpleton. Mads' comment on his discovery that he is using his friend as much or more as the North Koreans is refreshing. Best doc of True False.

A conformist culture caught on Candid Camera, but comparisons to Borat are not entirely apt. Red Chapel punctuates its joke with reality, and its self-reflexivity invites troubling questions: Does Brügger's deadpan endorsement of the totalitarian state help perpetuate the regime by allowing it to feed its isolated populace a line of bullshit about its open-mindedness and pluralism? And if so, does the self-aware irony of Brügger's complicity with the regime make him any less morally culpable?

Mads turns DPRK sympathiser to get the best reactions from his subject, look at what doors open when you start playing to their tune. Wheeling around Jacob was a genius touch for a few reasons, but primarily the stigma. Highlight by far is the parade sequence despite Jacob probably being contrary for moderation sake.

If putting on a fully scripted ultra-nationalistic performance prepared for you by the Good Leader's minions INSTEAD of the sarcasm-laden social commentary you had planned is "ironic," then this was the most ironic thing I've seen since my neighbor stepped in a pile of dog shit this morning... Dog shit that I prepared for him to step in! Mwahahahahahahahahahah!

Just like Ambassador. Not surprising, but insightful, brave and funny.

Hver gang jeg ser den, opdager og oplever jeg flere og flere facetter af gensidig udnyttelse af hinande - både de demokratiske danskere og de diktatoriske koreanere - meget seværdig

One of the ballsiest filmmaking stunts ever recorded. Mads Brügger is such a role model, but it's Jacob who is the heart and soul of the picture.

A fascinating look at the lines between exploitation and art but more importantly a surreal glimpse into the hermit kingdom. This film is a must see for North Korea fanatics, lovers of documentaries, and fans of avant-garde cinema as a whole. Calling it a treat may be difficult to say considering the subject matter but it is powerful

"The director's ploys are stymied by the very national illusion he contends masks death camps and a citizenry's consuming fear." - Nick Schager

Interesting premise but not all that riviting...the fact that it was shot in North Korea was more interesting than the film itself.

Three Danes, two of whom are Korean-born comedians (one a spastic), visit North Korea in an alleged cultural exchange, and what they see haunts and daunts them; when a crowd pumps its fists in praise of Korea and its leader, the director exhorts his companions to pump theirs, lest they fall out of favor. Madness abounds; the comedians attempt to put a show which is mutated by official interference, while they go on tours of a Pyongyang that shows few signs of life. Simply fascinating throughout.
