Not as amazing as Melies' work, but not without its share of great visual tricks. The little people in the bottles were especially cool. And I love the sets and costumes. Very macabre, very neat.

Quite uninteresting even for it's time. Melies understood few years earlier that cinema is a new form of art that needs it's own kind of narration (even if it was still quite primitive). But here we have a short that looks more like a filmed circus performance rather than a film.

Chomón and Zecca were Pathé's resident specialists in Méliès-inspired trick films, and put together some polished-looking takes on his style, with the added benefit of more dancing girls. It's all been done before, but this magic act still has more flair than half the acts playing Las Vegas right now. (Oddly, my favorite bit was when he walked in close to the camera--you hardly ever saw that sort of thing back then.)

This took what Méliès was doing to the next level but that being said I don't enjoy these story-less magic/magician films.
