As the leader of a 1928 Arctic airship expedition watches a television program about the disastrous undertaking, the ghosts of those involved in the voyage and subsequent rescue attempts gather to determine his guilt in the affair. Most of the film is a flash-back to the voyage and the international efforts to rescue the crew of the airship from an ice flow. (imdb)

Gripping survival drama. From what I can gather, it seems to be generally close to true story. Morricone's score is not one of his best, but it's good. The cinematography is less breathtaking than other films by Kalatozov, but some of the shots are quite marvelous, especially the aerials. The screenplay is very well written, and keeps generating drama at appropriate moments, with an unusual framing device. But it would have been nice to see more about the political aspects of this event.

The framing of the story as a trial exploring the difficulties of assigning responsibility means that the film suffers from a slow beginning, but it does pay some dividends in the end, with the final scenes being perhaps the most interesting. Some sequences are undeniably well done, but the telling of the main events is nevertheless somehow lacking, the scenes with Cardinale are mostly very clunky, and the "international" approach to casting doesn't help.

Not sure how this one never showed up on my radar; it's right up my alley. Based on the true story of an airship that crashed in the Arctic and the subsequent rescue attempts. Starring Sean Connery and Peter Finch. Thrilling action, well-acted and visually stunning.
