A delightful Disney jaunt about two representatives from a United Nations-equivalent organization, who stop a brutal dictatorship from using kidnapped child labor to retrieve blood diamonds for their crony-Capitalist aims, by use of unilateral pressure of force and violence from the dictator's nearest neighbors.

A truly great Disney film. Sadly, it is not remembered as well as it should be. It's one of the first Disney films to spawn a sequel as well, and deservedly so. There are many memorable characters, and the heroes are unique and extremely likable. Really good!

A sweet, cute little movie, even if it's straightforward. The animation seems occasionally underdone or reused, which I think is par for the course with 70s and 80s Disney movies.

Fans of the original Miss Bianca novels by Margery Sharp are likely to cringe when they learn that the action of these very Victorian, European, Gothic Adventure stories has been transposed to present day America, and that Gabor and Newhart are providing the voices of Bianca and Bernard. But although it is not The Same, it actually works. Victorian Gothic is now American Gothic, different but similar, and mainly just as entertaining. Probably the best that the post-Walt crew ever gave us.

It felt oddly *small*. Not because of the mice, or even because it focuses on the troubles of one little girl (I rather like the intimacy; it's one of the good parts of this era of Disney). It's more that it doesn't feel like it has quite enough story - like the reasons that we care about the things that are happening are pushed off to the sides. Nevertheless, I can see kids (who are awfully good at finding reasons to care) latching onto this for its aesthetic and its feverish shenanigans.

Not one of the well-known Disney films, but definitely leaps and bounds better than the modern Disney stuff. An underappreciated animated quasi-classic.

A film that raises more questions than it answers. No, not the murine United Nations, that is a concept I'm entirely on board with. It's Madame Medusa I don't understand. Why did she have to kidnap this particular child? Why not hire a literal miner and kill him? Why does she live on a old riverboat on the bayou, yet can afford rent for a store in NYC? Has she put any thought into this plan? What an ill conceived and non threatening villain. The Disney Renaissance could not come fast enough.

Not too bad. It's a great little adventure/detective cartoon for kids, but that doesn't mean it translates over completely for adults. Since I watched it as a child, I can say the sequel was more memorable for me, but I'd say this is a must watch for your children, especially little boys.

I still really love this style of sketchy rough lines that was the motif at Disney between the quote-unquote golden ages. The Rescuers is gorgeous, if fairly middling in drama and character, but still rather pleasant.

No way this would get made today as it's a bit too dark and relies on the wonderful power of hooch. Animation is a bit dated too but not bad by all means

So all the rescue aid society mice travel along with their United Nations counterpart - there is 100% a Jeffrey Dahmer mouse having sex with and eating a dead mouse somewhere. This is indeed a terrible universe.

Straightforward story. I liked the setup of the UN although it was a bit racist. Reused animation; unremarkable scenery and songs. Fav scene: crocodiles playing the organ.

This was much better than I expected. There is a gem of a story in this (remove the cuteness and do animal solving crime in grim Human world), if they ever do an adult version of this one; it might work wonders. MIss Medusa is in essence a Hannibal Lecter level villain (she is just at a sphere of cruelty that you wouldn't expect to see in a kid movie); I can see Julia Roberts or someone like that running away with Oscar with Medusa.

R-E-S-C-U-EEEEEEE! This movie is really cute. Little Penny will melt your heart and you'll just want to adopt her right away. This movie about two mice working for the Rescue Aid Society, is fun fun mystery/adventure. Eva Gabor's voice is perfect as Bianca. There are a lot of fun characters from Evinrude the dragonfly to Madusa (the films bad lady). There are a lot of fun parts but I love when the characters keep taking a swig of this moonshine to keep their energy up (Oh, Disney...)

Okay Disney flick. Trivia: The original film version of this movie is notable for having a single frame of a woman's breasts on the screen. Disney has since discovered and removed this.

Screw Down Under, this is the REAL Rescuers movie, and probably the most underrated Disney movie ever (apart from MAYBE Hunchback, although that's been getting more notoriety in recent years). Everything works almost TOO well - Medusa is too awful to enjoy hating, the tone and animation are too dark to truly "enjoy" at times, the vocal performances are too understated to really shine as great performances... and I love it.

(2014-15 Disneython #17:) I haven't seen this one in almost twenty years, and it's actually better than I had remembered. The animation is obviously quite flat and cheap, but there's tons of charm here; lots of personality in the characters and voices, real pathos and poignancy in Penny's backstory, and even some real eerieness in the cave sequence near the end. I'd have to call this one of the better pre-Little Mermaid Disney films.

This is a rare occasion where I thought the sequel was way better than the original. It might have to do with the fact that I didn't see this one until I was an adult, but the animation seemed sloppier, the plot didn't make sense (I don't really mean the premise, but the things that actually happened... If that makes sense), and the musical parts felt forced and unmemorable, especially since they're all non-diegetic, and rarely sync with anything happening on-screen.

Wow, what a dark story from Disney. The child in the movie is portrayed as a first grader, though I think this movie might be a bit too scary for a 6 year old and I'm not sure it would really play well with today's tweens and teens, but you could give it a try. Worth a watch if you are nostalgic and have Disney+ and I'd love to see a third installment. Pointless trivia: Both this and a little known movie called Star Wars were at the theater at the same time and both have characters named Luke.

It has some engaging characters (a dragonfly named Evinrude who bears a faint resemblance to Ben Turpin; a sagging-breasted, false-eyelashed villainess named Medusa) and some rousing action (a couple of crocodiles trying to ferret out two mice from a pipe organ; the plucky Evinrude trying to outrace a voracious horde of vampire bats). The animation, for fluidity and detail, would seem pretty pleasing by the standards of Saturday morning TV, but by the standards the Disney studio has taught us, i

Though some point to THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE as the beginning of the Disney animation renaissance, I think it began with THE RESCUERS. Good source material, terrific voice work, a sympathetic heroine and some great animation work and direction (the climactic cave scene!) make up for the slightly familiar villainess (is she Cruella DeVil's cousin?).

Includes several fun moments--especially the travelling scenes--and some colorful characters, but the film is fairly limp dramatically. The idea is a good one though, and it would be nice to see these travelling, rescuing mice in a vehicle that takes better advantage of that.
