The Revolt of Mamie Stover

The Revolt was a strange one. The film flowed in a peculiar way where I would identify certain problems with the pace and inconsistencies in the tone. Having said that, the bizarre atmosphere persisted throughout and in that sense was very solid. Said atmosphere is the thing that stroke me the most and the element that stuck with me. The palpable feeling of gloom and what seemed as the predestined fate of Mamie - with Jane Russell's impeccable personification - are the building blocks here.

Viewed August 24, 2021. Walsh's mise en scene is consistently striking, particularly the contrast he draws between expansive, movement-filled group scenes and forebodingly empty shots of Jane Russell and Richard Egan standing in front of a bold blue ocean. The central drama between Russell and Egan is too thin for this to earn its ending; the world of the nightclub, with Russell under the grip of Agnes Moorehead and her crony Michael Pate, is much more compelling.

Didn't buy it. Mamie's all over the place, passing up legit work, gunning for economic dominance, but also playing the victim--everything's completely self-serving until the last few minutes (seconds, really) where the change is way too abrupt to believe.
