George Brent and his women! Here opposite his future wife Ruth Chatterton. This film also featured his main screen lover Bette Davis in one of their earliest pairing. What helped this movie was that Chatterton actually looked like she was in love with her leading man. And I guess she was since she married him. The flirting felt legit and that helped a fairly ordinary story become compelling. Plus adding Davis as one of the fish trying to bait Brent only helped make this a good romance flick.

Light, airy pre-code fun (adultery, and lots of innuendo). Considering their (future) off-screen interactions, Brent saying to Davis "Have you ever TRIED being coy?" is quite amusing. It's said that Davis tried mightily to interest Brent while making this, but he was hooked on Ruth Chatterton (and soon married her). He's also more animated in this than I've seen him be in anything. Ruth Chatterton has an old-fashioned elegance, and Bette Davis is beginning to show flashes of coming into her own.
