Formulaic but perfectly done with excellent acting from both leads - Mifune plays the soft-hearted hard man well. You could say it is of a style that has long passed on but that is a blessing not a curse here. Plentiy of outside "action" scenes to liven things up and they are very well done. You may shed a tear whem you see all the missed chances between the two. A remake of a 1943 film (unseen) which is also here.

This movie is a wonderfully sentimental portrayal of a time and place that I share nothing in common with, but didn't mind at all. I found myself growing an affection for the characters. That is something that only great movies can do. If you can make it to the end without feeling emotionally drained or shedding a tear then you are made of iron.
