The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer
Fresh-faced young Michael Rimmer worms his way into an opinion poll company and is soon running the place. He uses this as a springboard to get into politics and in the mini-skirted flared-trousered world of 1970 Britain starts to rise through the Tory ranks. (imdb)

Areas are dated and some of the jokes are cheap, but this was still an incredible surprise, its themes and ideas still scathing in 2012 Britain and (sadly) still relevant. The technology and fashion may have changed, but the idea of an almost Satanic Peter Cook suddenly appearing, in an almost Kafkaesque scenario, and progressing upwards with the power of advertising, statistics and political manipulation is still relevant and, both in its absurdist and satirical humour, blackly hilarious.

Not all that funny, and despite the dark and cynical plot, not particularly scathing. This actually felt very light and shallow. Other movies with similar themes on manipulating public opinion and the lack of ethics in the media - Network comes to mind - are both funnier and have more bite.

A lot of jokes remain funny, considering the film's release date. Cook is quite eerie as the perfect prototype of the machiavel like politician. Thoroughly enjoyable
