Spends too much time as a sort of psychological horror movie only to switch gears about two-thirds the way through and become a full fledged and somewhat generic monster flick. I quite enjoyed the elements that left things up to the imagination. The thriller aspects, the hallucinatory sequences, and the hand on the tree. But the handling with the monster was largely uninspired.

I have a bit of a weakness for 'people getting fucked up in the woods' movies, probably because I'm not an outdoorsy person and not because I'm secretly the Blackwoods Killer, honest. The Ritual offers a familiar premise/escalation in a way I found engaging all the way through. The locations are atmospheric and once Weird Things start happening it keeps the viewer off-balance. Extra points for offering a visually interesting antagonist. (P.s. looking for 3 more for a Blackwoods hike, poke me!)

Some excellent acting and a fairly decent start. Much of the last half is filmed in near darkness. There were a few psychological aspects that were quite good. The overall premise includes too many unseen spooky events, a stupid monster seen only in outline, and far too much tiresome overbearing music. It gets more ridiculous and absurd as it progresses. Unfortunately, all the nonsense at the end ruins what was otherwise a good start.

I appreciate the attempt to make rural Sweden appear horrifying, but with my arguably limited knowledge of the country, of all the creatures roaming their forests, the militant feminists still scare me the most.

Nothing better than 4 midlife crises in the middle of a primeval Swedish forest that is most likely the setting for every fairy tale ever that ends up with the children being eaten. Who needs sexually hyper-active Millennials on Spring Break thinking they'd be better off if they split up, when you have a quartet of 40-somethings thinking they'd be better off if they split up. Still, I have a soft spot for hex-weaving Euro-hillbillies and animal-themed proto-deities, so the Ritual gets a pass.

Funny how post-Brexit, anywhere in Europe including fucking Sweden (or well, Romania posing as Sweden) can be passed off as a hellscape full of medieval savages. (And not to be that guy, but wtf is a Norse god doing in Lapland?!) That said, the all-lads reboot of The Descent isn't bad at all; some good (if underused) character work, nice use of the forest to create a bit of claustrophobia, and some fairly original monster effects.

An interesting and intelligently-framed creepfest, which utilises a good cast and Nordic locations to good effect. Spall is proving to be a versatile and likeable actor, and he does a fine job here, wrestling with loss, guilt and developing horror in a relatable manner. The threat, ambiguous at first, remains imaginatively realised throughout, even if it becomes less effective towards the end. As a whole it's good, but the parts that are undeveloped make it less satisfying than it could be,

slow dollies into the woods are spooky - the movie. two acts of guys yapping at each other to keep their shit together while finding their friends fucked in half and enjoying a whole lot of off-screen torture screaming. the third act? you're not going into this NOT expecting a whole bunch of genre-specific tropes, so i'm not gonna bother. if you've been looking for the (blair) vvitch of king kong forest, my friend, closure may be at hand.

The Ritual did, in my mind, what every horror movie should do - it mixed reality with folklore. The Ritual was fantastic. The story had so much going for it. The story between the five friends had realistic drama. The horror elements connected folklore with modern horror movie elements to make the audience fear what they can't see. I tend to like horror movies that don't show what we fear. I was happy with the payoff in The Ritual. The creature was cool without being corny. I'd watch it again.

(no spoiler)To me this movie hit all the right notes and unlike many other movies out there that follow these same formulas, at least in my opinion, this one managed to do something many others couldnt, have a satisfying ending. Its always some vague bullshit, the camera gets knocked over, the last one gets dragged away off camera...or if they do show something, its lame and obviously cgi. not this film. I want to know more after this movie went off. I need a sequel to this.

Surprisingly doesn’t build much tension in the first third, but it doesn’t need to. The unseen is frightening, and when you’re in the woods any direction can be dangerous, making it tense without the need of creepy music or imagery (even if it does use both at times). The characters were developed more than the average horror film, plot was the usual, the creature was a bit lackluster, which is why I preferred it hidden. Slightly unpredictable, better than expected.

On the manifestations of guilt, this starts out quite well and makes good use of its remote location, but suffers once the monster takes centre stage, at which point things become rather too obvious and familiar, leaving a sense of a missed opportunity.

A decent horror outing without too many jump scares. It holds back the reveal until fairly late, so that's a plus. The reveal itself doesn't disappoint. Some great forest locations and a clever mix at the end. Funny early, thanks to some good chemistry.

bleak, creepy, well-paced and well-distributed with opportunities to say "whoa, wtf". idk, big fan of nordic mythology and hiking. i enjoyed the first two acts, but it does truthfully start to get a little silly in the third. one of the better things you could watch in the horror section on netflix.

I'm definitely not booking a trip to stay in a cabin in the forests of Sweden anytime soon thanks to this movie. The tension did grow as the film mounted, and the night time forest scenes were executed to near perfection. It trails off in the final act when the truth behind the ordeal is revealed. A solid film as the four friends begin to lose their minds and become fodder for this creature stalking them in the woods. A solid enough movie if you want to invest in another creature based film.

The most interesting part is the monster, which is somewhat unique in concept compared to typical monster/horror fare. The issue is that a fraction of the film focuses on this, while the rest emphasizes bro-lationships that have detailed starting points but simply have nothing to do with being chased in the woods, although the incessant flashbacks insist it does. Take, instead, the minimal characterization in the original Blair Witch and how it emphasizes the present moment terror of unknowing.

If they had a bigger budget we could've seen more of the monster - which was the best bit. I know the fear of the monster is supposed to be, but this wasn't written well enough, so the sight of the Norse god was the best bit which we didn't get much of

It's way too dark for a lot of it. Apparently not just my TV since others had the same issue. It's predictable, uses a lot of the same tropes that so many horror movies use, the cast was okay and the relationships were somewhat interesting, though very surface-level. However, still entertained it, like the woods as a setting regardless, and the monster was awesome. Some hokey parts, ending resolution was a little too simple, some dumb shit happens, but a decent horror flick.

First part is too similar to the ultimate scary forest movie Blair Witch. Some compensation is offered by nice imagery of Swedish nature and the backstory adds some drama. Last part is suddenly a monster movie, which is surprising. Maybe it takes itself a bit too serious near the end since monsters are always a bit silly. That scene in the first cabin was intense though!

The actors, though not famous, delivered well their lines, giving much color and life to the entire movie. The plot is simple, yet so captivating and suspenseful that it can put you on your chair's edge. In the end, you'd wish there'd be a part 2 of this. Well done! My SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; Below 70=Forget it.

Boilerplate but well executed. Monster design is cool as everyone has pointed out. Theme feels arbitrary though, like they needed it to be about something so they went with grief because why not. Especially compared to the Babadook which felt way more personal and invested in its characters.

Initially promising, and later on too a bit more to chew on, but in the end this left me pretty much cold. A spooky yet unproductive agglomeration of stock elements, with the kind of cast that your eyes just sort of slide off of. Well summed up by critic Simon Abrams as "too smart to be this dumb".

A shockingly effective horror--I haven't watched something this tense in at least a decade. The pacing is ponderous at the beginning, which may have bothered me more had I not drifted in and out of sleep until the scary parts started; I watched this after midnight, so I don't know how much of the sleepiness was me and how much the movie. One to revisit eventually.

This story was oddly similar to Midsommar. The tone was obviously very different but it is funny that two movies about hidden eldritch powers in Sweden luring in and killing Anglophones that were there to recover from personal tragedies as a part of an ancient ritual came out in the past two years

Even if the Nordic mythology and the guilt flashbacks connect visually quite impressively, they never cohere as text. Any meaning dissipates in the end, but the tense, nightmarish, naturalistic direction announces Bruckner as a major talent.
