The River Wild

Passable thriller. No surprises, but the thrills are there.

I know this isn't a good movie, but something about it just keeps me watching each time it airs on TV. It's a predictable but solid comfort blanket film, always on TV when I was a teen and I enjoy it each time I see it. The gorgeous scenery, and Bacon chewing his way through it as the villain combined with Streep being a pretty good action hero (like she could do anything badly) make this a guilty pleasure.

Predictable action drama, made with some skill but too obvious in its plotting to create much suspense.

Viewed May 11, 2021. Solid survival thriller with a legitimately great performance from Meryl Streep at its center. I could watch movies with this general premise all day.

THE RIVER WILD is an outdoorsy DIE HARD clone, a stock-in-trade thriller elevated from obscurity by its overqualified stars. Streep is perfectly cast as a free spirited go-getter with conflicted feelings about her marriage to Strathairn's typically distracted '90s businessman. It's a nice foundation for a predictable family drama goosed by Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly as charismatic criminal louts.

Exciting. Watery. Meryl. I'd give it 4 stars.

Kevin Bacon hamming it up is the best part about this movie. Oh and John C. Reilly out of nowhere was a nice surprise. And there's some nice wilderness shots?

intelligent thriller with consideration for detail. great performances overall and meryl streep is just such a fantastic actress.

This is a very exciting thriller. Meryl Streep is outstanding in the lead role. Kevin Bacon is also very good as the lead villain. The scenery is great to look at and there are numerous thrilling scenes. You should definitely check this one out.

I was pretty against this at first. Stock characters, stock dialogue, stock situations. But then I realized it's not all that far removed from certain noirs I love, so I was able to loosen up and enjoy it for a bit. Though tremendously predictable, it's a comfortable predictability. Not exciting enough to feel any tension, but enough to be reasonably engaged. Still, I would have preferred a little more depth and nuance, or something more original. Goldsmith's score is pretty awful, too.

Meryl Streep in an action movie? Why not!

I admit it, I have a soft spot for this one.

Loved it as a kid. Joseph Mazello rocked my life. Just re-watched it and found it entertaining enough. Stop being a bunch of snobs.

Underrated. Very good, excellent cast.

Back when CGI was still in its infancy, so we get all crisp clean shots of a real river, with great backdrops throughout and effort taken to show the actors were doing most of their own stunts. Streep, Bacon and Reilly are on form too (the kid from Jurassic Park is possibly even more annoying here). I loved this in the ‘90s: watching now it’s good fun but pretty straightforward stuff. An old-fashioned family actioner which seemed to be two a penny back then but are shockingly sparse these days.

Meryl Streep was wearing a body licking wet suit duirng river got wild. Otherwise I did not like much the story. The gun was one of lames thing in there and I did not either like how Streep was such a she-man all the time.

Underrated, unintentionally funny and early Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly. Hell yeah.

A basic action flick. It isn't total crap, not by any means, but it is lightweight fluff. Not a film that will ever warrant more than one watch!

Fairly underrated for a suspense film. One of Bacon's robbed Oscar noms.

This isn't really my kind of movie. I mean, it should be. There's good suspense, good action...but the men in this movie are just castrated, and Meryl Streep's character is made out to be such a she-man, pushing around her husband at every chance. It's so heavyhanded that Streep's agent should have kept her away.

Run of the mill thriller.
