Contains a fair amount of that 1950's cheesy epic feeling. Not really moving, really typical for the time and kind of boring. It's hard for me to imagine that this was done by the same man who directed Harvey, they are almost opposites.

With the exception of Ben-Hur and Spartacus I find the sword and sandals films of the 1950s to all suffer from bloated runtimes and severe over-acting. The Robe definitely suffers from these faults, and is also just plain boring most of the time. The sets and costumes are tremendous for their time, and there are some cool set pieces, but otherwise it's a mediocre bible movie.

It's not bad, not as overtly cheesy as many of these biblical epics are. The opening half is quite good actually, but the second half is heavy handed and tedious.

Pretty not good to be honest. Unfortunately its the not fun kind of 50's camp, where nobody tells the actors its not a cartoon. The writing is really preachy and lazy as well. Really not too great at all.

Firstly, all those Jesus thing was crap! I hate this kind of cheesy propaganda! The actor playing Caligula was acting like as if this's a silent movie. In short: Boring, stupid and out of date.

Another religious epic, melodramatic but entertainingly so.

Erm... I'm an atheist and a fan of cult, exploitation and sleaze cinema, so I should be impermeable to this stuff. But I saw it as a kid, it has romans and swords and all those cool things - I saw it again and really liked it. Think I'll check "Jesus of Nazareth"...

"The Robe" is a plodding epic with great costumes and an overdramatic Richard Burton.

This is the story of Quo Vadis with the strange exception that it is set in a time when Rome didn't yet try to purge Christians. That has started at Year 64 and definitely after the rule of Caligula - who rules in this picture. Aside from that, it's a very good movie. The writing is top-notch, I've got shivers just from listening to the dialogue. The sets and costumes are really atmospheric. You truly get the spirit of Ancient Rome. Highly recommended if you want to see something in this period.

Not as good as the other Epics of its time - and not as contemplative as Quinn's Barabbas.
