The Rock (1996)
All of San Francisco is taken hostage when a vengeful general seizes control of Alcatraz Island, threatening to launch missiles loaded with deadly poison gas. With time running out, only a young FBI chemical weapons expert and a notorious federal prisoner have the skills to penetrate the island fortress and defuse the lethal situation.

|
An old-fashioned goodies battle the baddies with everything depending on an unlikely duo of a chemist and former criminal. Setting this warfare at Alcatraz works well (even if it does not organically emerge as part of the plot; it's a rather heavy-handed plot device, but it still works). Cage, Connery and Harris make for an effective trio. It's certainly action packed (Bay doing his thing).

It is the most prototypical 90's action film. Which isn't saying much, as it really couldn't be made today. The roles for women fail the Bechdel test. The gay hairdresser scene made me cringe when I saw the film when it was new. And the Department of Defense would (rightfully) hate a film that paints soldiers out as sociopaths. Still, it gets a slight marginal recommendation as a time capsule, and for the great chemistry between Cage and Connery. You can tell those two had fun making this.
