An excellent comic book movie. This was long before comic book movies were vogue in Hollywood, but it's stood the test of time. It's still, to this day, one of the greatest achievements in comic book movie history. It's inspirational (in the same vein as Superman), and Timothy Dalton plays an amazing villain. Not to mention it's got one of my favorite movie posters ever.

Hearkens back to a time when superheroes were fun, comic book plots were simple matinee fare and Jennifer Connelly was insanely hot. A great adventure movie that never takes itself overly seriously. Plus Alan Arkin makes everything better.

One of only two movies where I've honestly thought casting Timothy Dalton was most appropriate - a caricature of an overrated movie star (the other was Hot Fuzz). The movie itself is great old-fashioned comic booky type fun. Gangsters, Nazis, etc etc., and it's one of the few flicks that puts a lump in my throat when Cliff first suits up.

This is the kind of movie that would be challenging to study and figure out what's keeping it from being more exciting than it is, b/c technically there's nothing really wrong w/ it. My best guess? Until the Nazi plan is revealed, nothing feels at stake. The Apple Pie Americana vibe only reinforces the idea that the heroes won't die. The relationship w/ Connelly (who's stunning) is also never in doubt either & worse, it doesn't even really have an arc - they start off in love.

I endlessly watched this movie when I was a kid. Naturally it's nowhere near as good as I remember it, but not as bad as I feared. It's fun, but possibly the shallowest comic book movie I've ever seen.

Lightheaded fun. Breezy family entertainment with stupendous effects; even better if you know movie trivia, as it brims with Hollywood references, like a great villain (Dalton) clearly based on Errol Flynn.

The baddie with heavy makeup on is pretty lame - he's so out of place - but there's much to appreciate here: Connelly as the Rocketeer's sweetheart, the supporting cast, and an attention to detail. It's a fun watch and better than most superhero flicks released nowadays.

One of Hollywood's occasional forays into retro-mythmaking, based on a retro comic book hero and made with all of the Disney studio's resources. It's a refreshingly self-contained and tightly-plotted adventure, with Howard Hughes, Nazi spies, a zeppelin, and a lot more thrown into the mix. Timothy Dalton as the suave villain and Alan Arkin as the paternal mechanic come off best; Bill Campbell is a likable but slightly flat hero. Good, unself-conscious period detail adds to its visual strength.

This is one of those nostalgia flicks for me. Loved it as a kid and still am quite fond of it on more recent viewings. Of course it is simplistic and silly but I find it to be a great homage to the pulp genre with a likeable hero and an awesome musical score. Like Iron Man but with a better setting and a few characters I actually care about.

An enjoyable adventure film that I might have loved as a kid. Timothy Dalton has almost as much fun hamming it up here as he has in Hot Fuzz. There's a scene featuring both Terry O'Quinn and Alan Arkin with full heads of hair. It's weird!

Utterly charming throw-back to whiz-bang sensibilities thankfully takes its naïve story and tone with a resolute seriousness - an ounce of ironic distance would have been fatal here, though Dalton's hilarious hambone of an Errol Flynn impersonation comes close! Oodles of fun all the way if you can meet it on its own terms, with Campbell and Connelly perfect as the wide-eyed innocent heroes, and a fine supporting cast (including Ron's "Dick Tracy"-like henchman) are equally fine.

I used to love its ADs in my comics ( we were considered the right target audience, but we were not actually). IT is too sterile to be good and the effects aged really bad; seeing a young Jennifer Connelly was worth it though; I couldn't help myself imagining the girl here as the character in the Requiem for a Dream...

One of my favourites as a kid, it still stands up as a nice slice of nostalgic entertainment. As an homage to the classic pulp serials of the 30s and 40s, it plays like Sky Captain with soul, with a perfectly shmaltzy score. Campbell gives a serviceable performance as the rocket-man. He looks the part more than he embodies it, but his misgivings are covered by a strong supporting cast. The effects may not have aged well, but the movie itself is just as exciting today as it was in 1991.

A well-made and reasonably entertaining box-office flop based on the graphic novel by Stevens and old Republic serials like _King of the Rocket Men_. Arkin is a bit much as the bumbling professor who develops the jetpack but Connelly is sweet as the love interest. (The original heroine was a nudie model based on classic cheesecake goddess Betty Page and originally intended as a showcase for Stevens's ex-wife Brinke Stevens. Brinke Stevens in a Disney film? Not in this lifetime.)

I guess Johnston looked at 'Indiana Jones' and thought "Hey! I can recreate the ol' serials one to one". Well, not only does this feel like the end episode of such, it also feels as bad as Campbell's acting; an actor subsequently known for nothing at all. It does wonders for Connelly's breasts, though.

A heck of a lot of fun. Billy Campbell takes a hero who could've been boringly generic and makes him into a human puppy, and everyone brings their A-game. It hews a little closer than was necessarily a good idea to pulp tropes - the whole "he's actually German!" thing comes off as weirdly xenophobic - but overall, a solid adventure.

I loved this picture as a kid. I call it a picture because I feel old for remembering it and liking it. Especially reflecting now on the near-campiness of what was considered astounding blockbuster production value within the bracket of my lifetime. Still, be it pure '90s or not, it's one of Disney's most overlooked movies, look back at pulp matinee serials filled with all kinds of heroics and nostalgia in the spirit of big-studio era Hollywood.

(Viewed in 2012): The Rocketeer may have been released in the wake of Batman, but it's really a throwback to an earlier, much less cynical time in American mass entertainment where both the heroes and villains were two dimensional and the sentiment bordered on jingoism. Campbell and Connelly are bland but likeable, and Dalton is at his scene chewing best as the pompous Errol Flynn like baddie. The period of early aviation is lovingly recreated, and Horner's score is appropriately rousing.

This is basically an offbrand version of Indiana Jones - they even fight nazis on a zeppelin. The movie has some charm but too many flaws. The weird prosthetics on faux-Jaws are especially off-putting. The music is distracting, it's constant and sounds like someone imitating John Williams. The plot is boring, Campbell is only semi-convincing and did we really need an explicit shot of 21 y/o Jennifer Connelly's cleavage? She and Dalton are great though and almost make this worth watching. Almost.
