The Rocking Horse Winner

Well-acted and affecting version of one of DH Lawrence's best. They really nail the constant pressure of needing money and don't make anybody a one-dimensional greed-machine.

Shattering, powerful study of greed and venality is a perfectly balanced and judged example of the British 'message movie'; chilling and cut to the bone, with a relentlessness missing from similar mainstream films of the time. Entire cast is superb, with Hobson's social snob beautifully matched by Davies' mature and heartbreaking performance as the corruptible child. Efficient and direct storytelling another definite plus.

Decent version of the Lawrence story featuring a good performance from John Mills.

For some reason, this movie has a reputation as a classic. Actually, though, it's the most completely predictable story you could possibly make from this premise. Also follows the longstanding tradition of British cinema of being as dry as dust

Has real magic when the kid's rocking that rocking horse, but it's stale otherwise. And they did that bit over and over beating a dead horse in this one-trick pony.
