The Rookie

Drama, Sport

When a shoulder injury ended his minor league pitching career twelve years ago, Jim Morris resorted to the next best thing: coaching. But Jim's team, knowing their coach is a great ball player, makes a deal with him: if they win the district championship, they want Jim to try out for a major-league organization. Going from worst to first, the team makes it to state, and Jim is forced to live up to his end of the deal. While there prove to be a lot of pitches to be thrown before he makes it off the mound, big-league dreams are revived, and there's no telling where he could go. (imdb)

Essential viewing for all MLB executives, specifically Bud Selig and Rob Manfred, who stole the heart of baseball. MLB is symbolic of American ideals, primarily the one that says no matter how much you try, anything is possible, otherwise known as hope. Hope, via sport--the theme of this film. In 2015, MLB canceled tryouts, killing the hope that fed the sport. They killed baseball. Unfortunately, The Rookie, and the hope it represents, will be lost on the future of baseball fans, if any remain.

A boring movie that put me to sleep. I've tried to wipe it from my mind. The only image left is Dennis Quaid's face. So I'm obviously at the worst step of the wiping process.

Schmaltzy underdog sports film pulls out every cliche in the book but still manages to entertain, thanks to sincere performances by its cast; Quaid is always expert at mid-western everyman and it is largely his likable and commanding presence which sells this and sustains the film through some undercooked dramatic detours (the film never quite comes to grips as to how to deal with Cox's disapproving (?) patriarch, and Griffiths can't enliven the disapproving (?) wife role either).

This movie almost manages to overcome the many, many cliches and common problems with Disney-esqe sports movies but never really does. Dennis Quaid is actually solid in the role but it is just too much a Disney movie by design to be genuinely good.

A pretty uninspired Disneyfied sports drama about a dad who can throw a ball really fast, over and over - a subject about as interesting as watching paint dry. On the plus side there are some nice emotional connections Quaid has with his stern father (Brian Cox aka Hannibal Lecter), his broke wife (Rachel Griffiths) and his mentally retarded son. The small town baseball team stuff is cute but by God does the twangy country music get obnoxious by about the 6th or 7th montage it's used on.

A heart-warming sports flick, The Rookie greatly benefits from understated direction and the emotional honesty Dennis Quaid brings to the role of Jim Morris.

My passion for the sport and a good underdog story probably get this a few extra points. There are worse ways to spend a few hours.

This movie proves that "heartwarming" and "family oriented" can equate to good cinema. Thumbs up!

Based on a true story, this is a quite inspirational movie. Quaid is, as always, instantly likable.

Pretty ordinary mediocre sports movie but on the other hand it doesn't have any major flaws either.

Typical Disney flick - so heart warming, though the story is one of mediocrity if anything. "HS teacher signs minor-league pitching contract with Devil Rays to appear on one game to get one strikeout then retire - News at 11!" Seriously. If you're a lefty and can throw a fastball, you'll probably get a contract with the Devil Rays.

Unafraid to be sentimental, Dennis Quaid, Rachel Griffithm and Brian Cox's fine acting work save the movie from being overly-melodramatic.

Had I not known the true story of Jim Morris, this movie would've been a lot more entertaining. You just can't dispel disbelief when you know that the character that they're portraying didn't really do anything all that special. Feel good story, but it's been done MUCH better before.

Does any one make more bad movies than Dennis Quaid? Compared to some of his work this is an Academy Award winner.

A feel good Disney sports drama. You've seen them before. This really is no different. But it is well done, and less in-your-face than most. I was actually surprised that this movie ended well, as I was actually afraid that it wasn't.

Not as inspiring as other Disney movies along these lines had been in the past. There just doesn't seem to be as much depth to this one.
