Documented for the first time (this year) by actors portraying a fictional documentary crew documenting a fictional account of a non-fictional events previously documented, witness the untold story of a real story already told but with different names so it can be marketed as an untold story. I'm not going to say this was shit, but it was shit. Documented shit.

Love what they did with Jonestown. "Everyone, everyone don't be alarmed, VICE might publish an unsavoury article on us that might get shared on facebook but we will show them revolution we will lay down our lives!" Ridiculous, just picturing this article being published or whatever and some idiot comments "lol crazy!" and moves on to play Cwazy Cupcakes/ cut back to poison death camp.

Like a lazy schoolboy Ti West copy pasted Wikipedia article about Jenestown as a script and added the name of the popular newsblog to get financing to film it. The sad part is that reading Wikipedia article is much more entertaining than watching this film.

Ti West, of all people, doesn't need to be doing found footage. He's better than this. That said, if not for that and for West being known as a horror director, this probably wouldn't even be considered for the genre; it's a tense drama about trying to understand an incomprehensible decision - it falls short, but points for trying without turning into Red State. ETA: On second thought, fuck this shit. PUT THE FUCKING CAMERA ON A TRIPOD. PRETEND IT'S NOT THERE. STAND IN FRONT OF IT. ACT.

Mocumentaries should never have written epilogues. If this stuff didn't happen in the first place, I don't need an update on how it all turned out, you know, after you stopped making up the story. That said, there was a Q & A with Mr. West after the film and I can't help but appreciate what he was going for. Some good stuff here, worth a watch, but it's no Innkeepers, and Innkeepers was no House of the Devil.

This didn't really do anything to me. The actual Jonestown tape is a hundred times scarier. (2/5)

Despite some tension and downright terrifying scenes towards the end, the killing blow never lays its full effect due to lack of empathy towards the characters and situation; which is lamentable, given the director's previous films.

Seems unnecessary in a world where the actual tape exists.

It's a kind of "found footage" takeoff on the Jonestown massacre, but its inclusion of details from a real-life event is immaterial - in effect, it follows in the footsteps of very many cult-themed thrillers. Still, just as he did with House of the Devil, Ti West demonstrates that originality isn't everything. Some have called The Sacrament "slow-burning", but the buildup is its best aspect. The note scene is immensely creepy.

This would have been better if it was traditionally-shot, without the found footage aspects. But still I can say I enjoyed it. I love Ti West's slow, naturalistic, tense build ups. I was impressed by the writing too, especially with how the bullshit that Father spouted off didn't come across overly hokey. I could actually understand why people might buy into it. Most importantly, this was pretty freaky.

Unsatisfying horror take on religion that might be filed next to Kevin Smith's Red State for its lack of enough subtlety (or even guts) to make it worth. Actually, Sacrament plays more like an average Mansonian found-footage than the powerful Wicker Man/Kill List-like flick it promised to be. Worst Ti West film yet. Better stick to Gareth Evans' Safe Haven, the finest V/H/S/ feature.

While I am not a found footage fan to begin with, its use in this story definitely hurt the film. Why would a secret cult let a documentary film crew in? Forgiving films for not answering every question is a specialty of mine, but this was too big of a hole to let slide. Aside from this major problem, the rest of the film is quite a let down after a promising start. I stand by Ti West, but this is not a film I would recommend.

it's a weird mix of mockumentary footage and real film cinematography that takes away any possible immersion. there's no visual separation between the two, and i don't think you're even meant to make one. just swallow. also, like in almost every other movie of this type, the people with the cam show the outmost unnatural behavior and filming habits, which makes for quite a lot of facepalm moments. the acting ranges from bad to so-so, and everything else oozes mediocrity, too. no recommendo!
