The Saint Strikes Back

George Sanders takes the lead here, playing Templar as more of a gentleman rogue compared to the grittier edge given to the character by Louis Hayward in the first Saint film a year earlier. Sanders' portrayal is fine (albeit reminiscent of Basil Rathbone's incarnation of Sherlock Holmes), but the film itself is bogged down by a borderline incomprehensible plot and some rather flat acting.

George Sanders taking over the role of The Saint from Louis Hayward who played it in the first film that came out in 1938. Sanders would keep this part in the next 5 follow-ups. And I appreciated his take on The Saint, but the crime story wasn't nearly as interesting. Somewhat under-written resulting in a pure routine job and not one that gets deeper into the heart of what The Saint does.
