There's not a lot of movies you can honestly say "they don't make them like this anymore," but this is one of them. Such a product of the experimental, jazzy late 50s/early 60s verite movement. It's like Dementia without the suspense contrivances, and with the accusatory second-person narration of Blast of Silence. One of the most effectively cynical and paranoid films I've ever seen, with that rotten-streets vibe of Taxi Driver.

the enjoyable music and photography made me inclined to welcome the attempts at mind-blowing strings of words. who knows, maybe it did come across more poetic and subversive in 1960. I jotted down "sleep, enormous mother of us all".
