This movie didn't need to be made. The freakin' book was awful as well. I hate the Scarlet Letter.

Classic novel: check. Attractive stars: check. Script that aggressively misunderstands the whole point of the story: check.

Works best in its earlier stages as a silly, heavy breathing but compulsively watchable soap opera. Becomes progressively more tiresome and a dreary slog once Duvall makes his entrance; Duvall's performance is not uninteresting, but his pumped up histrionics feel like they belong in a different movie; the surface level study of religious hypocrisy and crazed witch hunts is a bit of a heavy-handed snooze. Production values are top-notch, and John Barry's Bond-inflected score is quite beautiful.

I always hated the book. One of the few films even Gary Oldman can't make watchable.

Trivia: an Native American attack on the town, found absolutely no where in the book, was inserted into this piece of dung movie. If you want to watch Demi Moore looking all serious and mournful, then here you go. For the rest of us...yeah, I'll watch Last of the Mohicans.

Demi Moore wasn't QUITE as terrible as I expected--my expectations were unbelievably low--but the totally invented "happy ending" is literally shocking in its badness.

Love the book. The movie changed the story & was not as well done at all. Lacks logical continuity.

HAHAHA. Whose idea was the magical lusty slave girl? Why does the sound of fairy dust play every time she appears in a scene?

I just realized this, but this is the same director as "The Mission" and "The Killing Fields". What did he just direct? "Captivity". I'm giving this movie points only because of 1) Oldman 2) Joffe directed "The Mission" and 3) Oldman. But a film of this badness (and disrespect towards its source material) is as career-ending as they come.

Lackluster. I prefer the book.

Not bad but Moore and Oldman didn't have the right chemistry to make you feel for their characters. Not the best adaptation of this work.

Trash. I wasn't the biggest fan of the original source material, but I wasn't one of those people in my class who absolutely abhorred the novel. Evidently, Roland Joffe was one of those people, because rather than make a rumination on the power of guilt, this is a shitty romance with elements of The Crucible thrown in willy-nilly. It sucks and not even Gary Goldman and Robert Duvall can save this piece of junk. Skip it.
