The Scarlet Letter

A very good, moving story with wonderful performances. Sjostrom uses some nice imagery at times and balances the tone of the film quite well.

Melodramatic to the core, sweeping me along in its wake so that I found myself laughing, swooning and crying at all the right moments and always gripped by the emotions that ran through the tale. I found the appearance of a certain character to feel more like a manifestation of the Priest's guilt rather than an actual event in itself.

one of the few nearly pristinely preserved silent features out there, and for good reason. it has a great story that lags a bit at times, but over all this is a good watch. it's not one that i would go out of my way to see except if you're really committed to silent movies.

Strong adaptation of the novel. Even with such a serious topic, there are moments of levity, which helps move things along while making some (even now) contemporary commentary.
